Calvin Basketball Teams Pull Out Thrillers over Albion/Kalamazoo * Swimming & Diving Teams Pick Up Dual Meet Wins at Kalamazoo

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 69, Albion 66

ALBION -- Another trip to Albion's Kresge Gymnasium proved fruitful for the Calvin men's basketball team as its upset third-ranked Albion 69-66 Saturday afternoon. The victory marked Calvin's third consecutive win over the Britons at Albion's Kresge Gymnasium including its fourth consecutive win in the facility as the Knights had also claimed an 82-61 victory over rival Hope at Kresge in the 2005 MIAA Tournament semifinals.

Calvin's victory over Albion (14-2 overall) on Saturday snapped a 14-game winning streak by the Britons and also created a three-way tie for first place in the MIAA standings as Albion, Calvin and Hope all have 5-1 conference records and hold a one-game lead over 4-2 Tri-State.

Calvin was forced to play without junior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) for nearly the entire game as the 6-5 power forward went down with an ankle injury 30 seconds into Saturday's contest.

Undaunted, Calvin (12-5 overall) held strong against the host Britons, trailing 33-28 at halftime and falling behind by as many as 10 points in the first half.

Calvin made its move early in the second half, using a 17-6 run to grab a 45-42 lead with 13:06 left to play. The lead then changed hands three times with Albion grabbing a lead at 52-51 and extending the margin to six at 57-51 with 6:05 to play.

Calvin freshman Dustin Smith (Hamilton HS) responded with a clutch three-pointer that sparked a 13-1 run by the Knights. The Calvin run was capped by a jumper from freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) with 1:01 left that put the Knights up 64-58. Albion mounted a comeback behind eight points from junior Zak Silas in the final minute but Calvin was able to hold on by connecting on 5-of-6 at the free throw line down the stretch.

Veldhouse led Calvin in scoring with 15 points with 11 coming in the second half. Senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) had 12 points including three free throws in the final minute of play. Draayer also connected on a pair of three-pointers in the win, bringing his career total to 185 and moving past Todd Hennink and into sole possession of second place on the Calvin career three-point field goal list. Senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) added 10 points including a pair of free throws with 28 seconds remaining. Meanwhile, Smith also had 10 points off the bench including a pair of three-point field goals. In addition, Freshman Tyler Zoerhof (Holland Christian HS) chipped in with nine points, six rebounds and two assists off the bench with six of his points coming from beyond the three-point arc.

Collectively, Calvin's bench accounted for 26 of its 69 points.

Albion was led in defeat by senior Brandon Crawford who tallied 17 points and 11 rebounds while also picking up four assists and two blocked shots. Silas and Michael Bailey added 15 points apiece.

Calvin shot just 38.2 percent from the field but connected on 44.4 percent (8-of-18) of its three-point attempts as five different Calvin players connected on at least one three-pointer.

Albion shot 43.6 percent overall but just 29.6 percent from three-point range. Albion also held a 37-36 rebounding advantage but the Knights held a 15-9 advantage on the offensive glass which accounted for 10 second chance points.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Kalamazoo for an 8:00 p.m. contest.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 57, Kalamazoo 54

GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin managed to escape an upset bid by visiting Kalamazoo (5-11, 2-7 MIAA) Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse, holding on for a slim 57-54 conference victory. The win allowed 17th-ranked Calvin (14-2, 8-1 MIAA) to remain in second place in the MIAA, one game behind league-lading Hope.

Calvin started the scoring and held a six-point lead when senior Sarah Winkle (Grand Rapids/South Christian) made a lay-up to put the Knights up 8-2. Though the Hornets inched within one of Calvin, 13-12, Calvin extended its lead to eight with just under seven minutes to play, 27-19. However, the Hornets launched a 13-3 run that gave Kalamazoo a 32-30 halftime lead.

Junior Lisa Winkle tied up the game with a lay-up at the start of the second half, but Kalamazoo capitalized on four free-throw attempts and a lay-up to lead by six, 38-32. The game became tied again at 38 after Calvin connected on consecutive three-pointers, one from freshman Kelly Trewhella (Rockford/Rockford) and the other from sophomore Charis Larson (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian). Two more back-to-back triples allowed the Knights to grab a 46-44 lead as Larson and then freshman Kristi Brummel (Byron Center/South Christian) each sunk one from behind the arc.

Kalamazoo soon tied the game for the fourth time, 48-48, and then took a two point lead with under 6:00 to play. Brummel came up big again, making her third three of the game and giving the Knights a 51-50 lead. The Hornets came ahead one last time when senior Mary Brown made a pair of free-throws with 4:54 to go. Relentless from the three-point line, Calvin connected on another triple, this time from sophomore Lindsey Peuler (Grandville/Grandville), a shot that made the score 56-52 with just over 2:00 left. Kalamazoo's Stefanie Salasky's made lay-up at 1:43 intensified the game, bringing the Hornets within two at 56-54.

Kalamazoo then had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but misfired on a pair of free throws with 59 seconds left and then missed three consecutive shots in the paint after grabbing the offensive rebound of the second missed free throw.

A turnover with 29 seconds remaining gave Kalamazoo the ball again but a shot in the paint by Brown with 15 seconds remaining was short with Brummel grabbing the rebound. Brummel was fouled with five seconds left and nailed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity. Brummel missed the second but after calling timeout with 3.6 seconds left, Kalamazoo was unable to get off a potential game-tying three-point attempt.

Freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had 14 points and eight rebounds for Calvin; Lisa Winkle scored 12 points, grabbed eight boards, and blocked six shots; and Brummel had 10 points, while Sarah Winkle, Larson, and Peuler added six points apiece with Sarah Winkle grabbing 13 boards. Altogether, Calvin made eight three-point shots, six of which came in the second half.

Salasky led Kalamazoo with 15 points and 13 rebounds while Brown added 14 points. The Hornets were given 26 chances at the foul-line while Calvin only attempted nine free-throw shots.

The Knights will go on the road next week, facing Rochester College on January 25th in a non-conference game and then facing conference-opponent Adrian on Saturday, January 28.
