ALLENDALE * The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams dropped non-conference dual meets at Grand Valley State Friday night as the men were defeated 178.6-60.5 while the women were edged by the host Lakers 125-118.

On the women’s side, it marked the second consecutive meet that Calvin was edged in the final event to decide the final outcome as the Knights had also suffered a 154-146 defeat at Wayne State last Saturday.

As it did last Saturday, Friday’s meet came down to the 400 freestyle relay with Grand Valley State pulling out a first place time of 3:39.50, seven-tenths of a second ahead of Calvin’s second place squad.

Calvin did record seven first place performances on the women’s side with junior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) picking up a pair of individual victories, winning the 100 freestyle (52.78) and 200 freestyle (1:53.76). Weima also anchored Calvin’s winning 400 medley relay team that also included freshman Jordan Scott (Oakville, ON), junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) and freshman Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH).

Wolfe was part of a one-two Calvin finish in the 100 freestyle as she also took second e place with a time of 55.61.

Other individual winners for Calvin included sophomore Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) in the 50 freestyle (25.44), Scott in the 200 backstroke (2:13.15), Wilson in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.19) and freshman Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) on the one-meter diving board (249.90).

On the men’s side, Calvin received a first place performance from senior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) in the 200 backstroke (2:03.34). Bagnall also anchored Calvin’s winning 400 freestyle relay team of junior Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS), sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL) and junior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) that posted a first place time of 3:13.33.

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is now 8-3 in dual meet competition this year while the Calvin men’s team is 2-8.

Both teams return to action on Saturday to compete in conference dual meets at Kalamazoo scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
