Men's Hoops Falls to Regis * Snaps Four Game Win Streak

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Regis University 64, Calvin 57

DENVER, CO * Playing in its first game in more than three weeks, Calvin suffered a 64-57 defeat at Division II Regis University Friday night.

Calvin (6-4) overcame a 14-point second half deficit to take a 54-53 lead with just over three minutes remaining but could not hold the lead as the host Rangers outscored the Knights 11-3 down the stretch.

Regis (7-5) held a 28-27 halftime lead and then used a 17-4 run in the opening five minutes of the second half to take a 45-31 lead.

Calvin countered with a 22-9 run capped off by a three-pointer by senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) to take a 54-53 lead. Regis responded with a run over the final three minutes however to pull away for a fifth consecutive win while snapping Calvin's four-game win streak.

"I thought the first five minutes of the second half were pivotal," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "Tonight's game was very physical and intense and in the first five minutes of the second half, we didn't match the intensity of Regis. Give our guys credit though, they fought back and took a lead. I was very proud of that and of our effort overall."

Calvin was led in defeat by Trewhella with 18 points while senior Andy Draayer (Denver, CO) had 13 points and seven rebounds in front of his hometown crowd. Junior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) chipped in with nine points and six boards. Regis was led by junior Brandon Butler with 15 points while senior Logan Garvin had 14.

Calvin shot just 36.5 percent overall including just 32.1 percent overall. Regis shot 53.5 percent overall but kept Calvin in the game by converting just 15 of its 28 (.536) of its free throw attempts. Calvin also held a slim 32-31 rebounding edge.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it faces Colorado Christian University in Denver in a game slated to start at 3:00 p.m. (EST).
