Men's Hoops Improves to 7-4 With Victory Over Colorado Christian
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 85, Colorado Christian 75
DENVER, CO * Calvin will head into its 2006 MIAA campaign with a 7-4 record after defeating Division II Colorado Christian University 85-75 Saturday afternoon.
The Saturday afternoon victory wrapped up a week-long stay in the Denver area which marked the homecoming of Calvin College senior forward Andy Draayer, a graduate of Denver Christian High School.
Draayer put on a good show for his hometown crowd on Saturday, pumping in a game-high 24 points on the strength of five three-point field goals. Calvin connected on 12 of 25 attempts from beyond the three-point arc in the win for a sizzling 48.0 percent three-point clip.
Saturday's game was in sharp contrast to a Friday night contest against Regis University that saw the Knights connect on just 5 of 16 (.313) three-point attempts in a 64-57 loss.
Draayer was one of three Calvin players to reach double-digits in scoring on Saturday as junior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian HS) and freshman Caleb Veldhouse (Sioux Falls, SD) had 13 points apiece. Veldhouse connected on a pair of three-pointers inside the final five minutes of play that helped seal the win.
Senior Kyle Trewhella (Rockford HS) and junior Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) added nine points apiece while junior Josh Meckes (Bay City) had four points and a team-high six rebounds.
Colorado Christian was paced by freshman Brian Stamer who tallied 23 points and 0 boards while Josh Gallgaher had 12 points and Kellen Lenihan and Peter Bailey 10 points apiece.
"We knew that this game would be a more up-tempo affair than last night's game with Regis which was very physical and featured a deliberate pace," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "I thought we executed very well down the stretch today, particularly with our clock management."
Facing contrasting styles on back-to-back nights may also benefit Calvin heading into its MIAA campaign which begins next Wednesday at Tri-State.
"We see several different styles of play in our league so I thought our two games this weekend helped prepare us for that," said Vande Streek. "We had a very physical game lat night and a more wide-open contest today. We'll see both styles in our league."
Calvin's game at Tri-State Wednesday night is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m
