CALVIN THIRD IN DIRECTOR'S CUP CHASE AFTER FALL SPORTS SEASON
The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup chase is now complete through the fall
sports season and Calvin currently sits in third place with 283 points. The
College of New Jersey leads the overall standings with 339 points with Messiah
second with 290. Calvin holds a 31-point lead over fourth place Tufts (MA).
This past fall, Calvin scored points with five different teams, marking the
first time it had ever done so.
Scoring for Calvin were its men's and women's cross country teams, its
men's and women's soccer teams and its women's volleyball team. The
men's cross county team produced the most points with a national runner-up
finish that was worth 90 points. The men's soccer team and women's
volleyball team both reached the Sweet 16 round of their respective national
tournaments with each team scoring 64 points. The women's cross country
picked up 40 points with a 17th place national finish while the women's
soccer team scored 25 points after advancing to the NCAA III Tournament.
The U.S. Sports Academy Director's Cup is based on points earned by teams that
compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National
Association of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall
collegiate athletics program in the country. The NACDA Director's Cup race is
held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.
Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in NCAA III Championship
competition in up to 18 sports -- nine for men and nine for women. Each
national champion receives 100 points with a national runner-up finish worth
90 points. Third place is worth 80 points and fourth place finishes count for
75
points with a sliding point scale continuing on down by order of finish.
A year ago, Calvin finished sixth in the final Division III standings with a
total of 617 points, matching its best-ever finish in the competition.
Calvin is one of only 10 schools to finish in the top-25 every year that the
competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Competition continues with the winter sports and spring sports seasons.
