Women's Basketball Runs Win Streak to Five With Victory over Concordia

Calvin 71, Concordia 32
GRAND RAPIDS * Calvin used stifling defensive pressure to run its win streak to five games, downing Concordia (MI) 71-32 Saturday afternoon at the Calvin Fieldhouse.
Ranked 19th in the latest D3hoops.com Top-25 poll, Calvin (7-1) limited the visiting Cardinals (3-10) to 23 percent field goal shooting including just 20 percent in the second half. Meanwhile, the Knights shot 50.9 percent overall including 51.9 percent in the first half.
Calvin opened the game with a 19-2 run and never looked back. The Knights were led in scoring by junior forward Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) who tallied 12 points, five rebounds, four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Freshmen Kristi Brummel (South Christian HS) and Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also hit double-digits in scoring with Brummel netting a career-high 11 points on the strength of three three-pointers while Harris had 10 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Sophomore Erica Boonstra (Chicago Christian HS) and freshman Sarah Partridge (East Lansing HS) chipped in with eight and seven points respectively. Senior forward Sarah Winkle (South Christian HS) also had a solid all-around game with six points, three steals, two assists and a pair of rebounds.
Calvin's bench provided strong support as 40 of Calvin's 71 points came from its reserves.
Concordia was led in scoring by Katie Schweiger who tallied 10 points.
Calvin held a 41-29 rebounding advantage and collected a season-high 22 assists in the win.
Calvin also connected on a season-high eight three-pointers in the win with Partridge picking up two triples and sophomores Lindsey Peuler (Grandville HS) and Wendy Zigterman (Timothy Christian HS) and freshman Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) picking up one trifecta apiece.
Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Adrian at 7:30 p.m. in an MIAA conference game.
