Calvin Men's Soccer Players Named to Great Lakes All-Region Teams
Three members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received Division III
Great Lakes All-Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of
America.
Senior Kurt Visker has been named to the Great Lakes All-Region first team
while senior Peter Malefyt has been named to the second team and junior Nick
Capisciolto to the third team.
Visker is making his second straight appearance on the first team and is
receiving all-region accolades for the third straight year. Visker was a
second team all-region selection in 2003. A native of Grand Rapids and a
graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Visker finished the 2005 season
with 10 goals and three assists while serving as a defensive back. Last month,
Visker was named to the All-MIAA first team for the fourth consecutive year.
Earlier this month, he was named a Division III first team All-American,
becoming the first player in Calvin men's soccer history to earn All-America
accolades in back-to-back years.
Malefyt is from Lansing and is a graduate of Lansing Christian High School.
Malefyt is receiving all-region honors for the first time in his career. A
defensive back, Malefyt helped key a Calvin defense that allowed only 18 goals
and posted a team goals-against-average of 0.79. Calvin's defense also
posted nine shutout victories during the season. In addition, Malefyt scored
three goals this fall including a game-winning penalty kick shot in a 2-1
overtime win at Adrian. Last month, Malefyt was named to the All-MIAA first
team for the second straight year.
A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Unity Christian High School,
Capisciolto is receiving all-region honors for the first time in his career. A
midfielder, Capisciolto scored nine goals and tallied 17 assists this fall for
a team-leading total of 35 points. His assist total matched a Calvin
single-season record. He also finished third nationally in assists-per-game
average (0.81).
The Calvin men's soccer team has now had 43 all-region selections in program
history including 10 in the last three years.
Under the direction of fourth-year head coach Chris Hughes, Calvin finished
the 2005 season with a 17-4-2 mark, earning its second straight trip to the
NCAA III Tournament.
Calvin advanced to the Sweet 16 round of the 2005 NCAA III Tournament,
defeating Edgewood 4-0 in the first round and second-ranked Ohio Wesleyan 2-1
in the second round. The Knights were then eliminated in a national
semi-quarterfinal game against Fredonia State (NY) which concluded in a 0-0
double-overtime tie with Fredonia winning a penalty kick shootout 3-2. Calvin
then finished the year ranked 16th in the final Division III Top-25 poll of the
year.
Calvin's total of 17 victories was the third-highest in school history,
surpassed only by the 19 wins achieved by its 1991 team and the 18 victories
achieved by its 2004 team. Over the last three years, Calvin has produced an
overall won-loss record of 50-11-3 for a winning percentage of .786. Included
in that three-year span are two MIAA titles and two NCAA III Tournament berths.
