Basketball Teams Pick Up Victories Over Wheaton at CCIW/MIAA Challenge
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 50, Wheaton 45
GRAND RAPIDS - A youthful Calvin women's basketball team grew up a little bit more on Saturday as the Knights upset seventh-ranked Wheaton (IL) 50-45 in the second day of competition at the CCIW/MIAA Challenge held at the Calvin Fieldhouse. The victory was the third straight by Calvin including its fourth in its last five tries against Wheaton.
With just one senior, one junior, four sophomores and six freshmen on its roster, Calvin (5-1), features one of the youngest teams in its program history. But down the stretch in Saturday's game with Wheaton (5-1) the Knights played like veterans and gained their biggest win of the young season.
Saturday's game featured the intensity of a national tournament game and featured seven ties and four lead changes in the second half after Calvin had taken a 23-15 halftime lead.
With the score tied at 39, Calvin took the lead for good on a layup inside by junior forward Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) with 5:15 left on the clock. Sophomore Kelly Trewhella (Rockford HS) followed with a driving layup in traffic to give the Knights a 45-41 lead only to see Wheaton close to within two on a scoop shot by Brittany Cooper with 4:11 remaining.
Freshman Marcia Harris (Grand Rapids Christian HS) put Calvin back up by four with a power-move inside but Elizabeth Fox answered with a power-move of her own to bring the Thunder within 45-43 with just 1:38 left on the clock.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Harris was able to break through Wheaton's full-court press and delivered a pass to senior Sarah Winkle (South Christian HS) along the right baseline that Winkle buried from 15 feet out to give the Knights a 47-43 lead with 1:25 left to play.
After a Wheaton timeout, Calvin forced the Thunder into a turnover with 45 seconds left and Trewhella was subsequently fouled with 26 seconds remaining. Trewhella made the first and missed the second to give the Knights a 48-43 lead. After Wheaton trimmed the lead to 48-45 on a putback by Cooper with 10 seconds left, Trewhella was fouled again and proceeded to hit two free throws with five ticks on the clock to seal the Calvin win.
Saturday's game featured a match-up of pre-season All-Americans in Calvin junior Lisa Winkle and Wheaton sophomore Jill Trenz. Winkle finished with 13 points, five rebounds, four blocks and four steals while Trenz came up with 11 points, six boards, one block and one steal. Harris also gave the Knights a strong post prescence, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Sarah Winkle also had a big game, scoring eight points and grabbing a game-high nine rebounds. Freshmen Sarah Partridge (East Lansgin HS) and Kristi Brummel (South Christian HS) contributed seven and five points respectively off the bench with both players connecting on key three-point field goals in the second half for Calvin. Trewhella also had five points and three rebounds for the Knights.
In addition to Trenz, Wheaton was led in scoring by Cooper who tallied 14 points, eight rebounds and four steals while Kathleen Fidelia and Fox chipped in with eight and seven points respectively.
Calvin finished the game with a 45.2 percent field goal clip while holding Wheaton to 30.0 percent field goal shooting. Wheaton's pressure defense kept the Thunder in the game however, as they forced Calvin into 30 turnovers including 16 in the second half. Wheaton turned the ball over 18 times in the game. Calvin also held a 39-31 rebounding advantage and connected on 10-of-14 (.714) at the free throw line while Wheaton was 6-of-12 (.500) at the charity stripe.
In the first CCIW/MIAA game of the game, Hope defeated Carthage 71-42 with the MIAA finishing with a 3-1 advantage against the CCIW with the only CCIW victory coming on Friday in a 47-40 Wheaton victory over Hope. On Friday, Calvin also defeated Carthage 59-43.
Now in its second year of competition, the MIAA holds a 7-1 advantage over the CCIW in the conference exchange tournament.
