KYLE TREWHELLA NAMED MIAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK IN MEN'S BASKETBALL;
SWIM TEAMS FINISH STRONG AT EMU INVITATIONAL

MEN'S BASKETBALL

For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin senior Kyle Trewhella has been named MIAA Player of the Week in men's basketball.

A native of Rockford and a graduate of Rockford High School, Trewhella came up big in the clutch last week, helping Calvin gain victories over Trinity Christian, Carthage and Wheaton as the Knights improved to 5-3 on the year.

In a 75-74 victory over Trinity Christian Wednesday night, Trewhella scored 24 points including seven in the final minute of play. Trewhella's final point game on a free throw with one second remaining to give Calvin its only lead of the game.

He followed with 15 points in an 82-78 victory over Carthage Friday night at the CCIW/MIAA Challenge. Trewhella scored seven points in the final 2:08 of regulation including a pair of free throws with two seconds left to seal the win. Calvin then closed out the CCIW/MIAA Challenge on Saturday with an 84-64 victory over Wheaton (IL) with Trewhella scoring 20 points and dishing out six assists.

On the week he made 20-of-38 shots (.526), including 12-for-19 (.632) from three-point range. He was 7-of-11 (.636) on free throws to finish with 59 points. He was also credited with 10 assists.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday when it travels to cross-town rival Aquinas for a non-conference game scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Aquinas College Fieldhouse.

SWIM TEAMS FINISH UP AT EASTERN MICHIGAN INVITATIONAL

YPSILANTI * The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the two-day Eastern Michigan Invitational Saturday night with the Calvin women taking fourth in a 10-team field with a score of 425 points while the Calvin men took fifth with a score of 364 points in a field of 10 teams.

Highlights of the women's meet included:

*Junior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking third in the 200 freestyle with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:52.27 and taking sixth in the 500 freestyle with an NCAA II conditional qualifying time of 5:06.02.

*Senior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) taking sixth in the 400 IM (4:43.47) and eighth in the 200 IM (2:13.20) and junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) taking seventh in the 400 IM (4:45.29).

*Sophomore Kat Vinson (Kaneohe, HI) taking eighth in the 50 freestyle (24.97).

*Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Weima, junior Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL), freshman Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS) and Vinson taking third with an NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 1:37.29 and Calvin's 800 freestyle relay tea of sophomore Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL), Johnson, freshman Julie Wolfe (Westerville, OH) and Weima taking fourth with a time of 7:53.44 that was just off an NCAA III conditional qualifying mark.

Highlights of the men's meet included:

*Junior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) taking eighth in the 200 freestyle with a season-best time of 1:46.47.

*Senior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA) taking seventh in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.17.

(Calvin's 800 freestyle relay team of Tuuk, sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), Bagnall and junior Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) taking fourth with a time of 7:13.54 and its 200 freestyle relay team of Resseguie, Bagnall, Tuuk and Boumgarden taking third with a time of 1:26.33.

Calvin did not have divers competing at the Eastern Michigan Invitational. However, Calvin did host its own diving invitational on Saturday which included divers from Kalamazoo, Hope, Grand Valley and Olivet,

In the women's three-meter competition, Calvin freshman Erica Deur (Holland Christian HS) took first place (11 dives) with a score of 389.45 while senior Julie Erickson (Libertyville, IL) was third (346.20), sophomore Lis Beal (Grand Rapids Christian HS) fifth (311.25), freshman Jeena Velzen (Unity Christian HS) sixth (290.95) and freshman Bethany Kortman (Calvin Christian HS) seventh (290.15).

In the women's one-meter competition (11 dives), Deur took second (366.90) with Erickson fifth (294.20), Beal seventh (260.90), Velzen eighth (243.80) and Kortman ninth (238.55).

On the men's side, Calvin freshman Jack Ryfiak (Grand Rapids Christian HS) took third on the three-meter board (361.85) and fifth on the one-meter board (351.10). Freshman Jordan Squires (Onsted) also posted a score of 230.10 on the one-meter board with freshman Dennis Steenbergen (Aylmer, ON) recording a score of 173.95.
