CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR DECEMBER 2, 2005

SWIM TEAMS START STRONG AT EMU INVITATIONAL

YPSILANTI * The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams both opened competition at the Eastern Michigan Invitational with strong performances Friday afternoon and evening as the women stood in fourth place with 105 points in a field of eight teams while the men were tied for fifth place in a nine-team field with a score of 107 points.

Highlights in the women's competition included:

*A fifth place swim by junior Becky Weima (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 100 freestyle with a strong NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 52.07.

*A seventh place swim by senior Abby Johnson (Grand Haven HS) in the 200 backstroke with a season-best time of 2:11.52

*A 10th place finish by sophomore Kat Vinson (Kanehoe, HI) in the 100 freestyle with a season-best time of 54.12.

*A ninth place finish by junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) in the 200 breaststroke with a season-best and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 2:25.45. Calvin junior Barbara Frazier (Placerville, CA) was just off an NCAA III conditional qualifying time in the event with an 11th place time of 2:28.71.

*A third place finish by Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL), Vinson, junior Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensenville, IL) and Weima with a season-best and NCAA III conditional qualifying time of 3:34.58

On the men's side, highlights included:

*A season-best time of 47.66 by junior Andrew Resseguie (Holland Christian HS) in the 100 freestyle that was good for sixth place.

*A season-best time of 48.55 by junior Peter Tuuk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 100 freestyle that was good for ninth place

*A season-best time of 3:12.72 by Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), senior Luke Bagnall (Marshalltown, IA), Tuuk and Resseguie that was good for fourth place.

The second and final day of competition continues on Saturday at the Eastern Michigan Natatorium.
