Carthage went without a field goal for nearly 10 minutes in the second half as Calvin extended its lead to 18 points at 59-41 with under a minute to play.

MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 82, Carthage 78
HOLLAND * Calvin's first trip to the DeVos Fieldhouse on the campus of Hope College went down in the history books as a victory as the Knights defeated Carthage College 82-78 in the first game of the 2005 CCIW/MIAA Challenge. In the second game, Hope defeated Wheaton 93-67.
Calvin's victory over Carthage (1-3) was a come-from-behind effort as the Knights (4-3) trailed 36-33 at halftime but fought back to take a 52-47 lead with 12 minutes remaining.
Carthage came roaring back behind a 13-2 run to take a 70-65 lead with 4:28 remaining but Calvin refursed to fold and tied the game at 72 on a three-pointer by senior Kyle Trewhella with 2:08 left on the clock. One minute later, Trewhella hit another jump shot to give the Knights a 76-74 lead but the Red Men countered with a basket by Trey Bowens to tie the game at 76. Calvin freshman Caleb Veldhouse was fouled with 33 seconds remaining and swished both free throws to give the Knights a lead they would not relinquish.
Veldhouse added two more free throws with six seconds remaining and Trewhella tossed in two more with two ticks on the clock to seal the Calvin win.
Veldhouse finished with a career-high 24 points, connecting on eight-of-nine from the field including six-of-six from the free throw line. He also collected four rebounds and three steals. Trewhella was next with 15 points while senior Andy Draayer had 14 and junior Josh Meckes 12 points, seven rebounds and four blocked shots off the bench. Freshman Tyler Zoerhof also had a strong game off the bench with seven points, six rebounds and three blocked shots.
Carthage was led by Bowens who picked up 22 points while Kyle Jefferey had 16, Navarrao Thompson 12 and Keena Johnson 11.
Calvin's free throw shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the Knights were 20-of-24 (.833) at the charity stripe while Carthage was six-of-eight (.750) at the line.
Calvin will face Wheaton on Saturday at 1:00 pm while Hope will meet Carthage at 3:00 pm.
