CALVIN VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS RECEIVE ALL-MIAA HONORS
The All-MIAA volleyball teams have been released and several Calvin players
have been so honored. Named to All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior
Christine Hendricks, junior Lorilyn Vogel and sophomore Katie Zondervan.
Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are sophomore Molly Krikke and
freshman Lauren DeGroot.
A 5-11 middle-hitter, Hendricks hails from Cincinnati, Ohio. She is a
graduate of Turpin High School and is making her first appearance on the
All-MIAA first team. In conference play, Hendricks finished ninth in the MIAA
in kills-per-game this fall (3.48), and eighth in service aces per game (0.46).
She was also named MIAA Player of the Week three times.
Vogel is a 5-10 outside hitter from Orange City, Iowa. She is a graduate of
Unity Christian (IA) High School. In her first year as a full-time starter on
the outside, Vogel finished second in the MIAA in hitting percentage (.346) and
kills-per-game (4.77). Vogel is also making her first appearance on the
All-MIAA first team.
A 5-6 setter, Zondervan has been named to the All-MIAA first team for the
second straight year. A native of Lakewood, California and a graduate of
Valley Christian High School, Zondervan led the MIAA in assists-per-game
(14.44) and service aces (0.70) this fall. In a three-game win over Olivet on
October 28, Zondervan served up 14 aces to set an MIAA single-match record.
Krikke is from Greenwich, Ohio and is a graduate of South Central High
School. A 5-11 middle-hitter, Krikke was eighth in the MIAA in hitting
percentage (.307) and second in blocks-per-game (1.18). DeGroot is a 5-6
libero. She is a graduate of Tulare, California and is a graduate of Central
Valley Christian High School. DeGroot was fourth in the MIAA in digs-per-game
(5.00) this fall and sixth in service aces per game (0.49).
In addition, DeGroot has been named the MIAA's Freshman of the Year and the
MIAA's Defensive Player of the Year. It marks the third straight year that
Calvin has received the MIAA Freshman of the Year award as Zondervan received
the award in 2004 and Kristen Kalb in 2003. The MIAA Defensive Player of the
Year Award is not only staying at Calvin, but also staying in the DeGroot
family as older sister Kristen DeGroot was the MIAA co-Defensive Player of the
Year in 2004.
Calvin senior Katie Schultz of Escondido, California, received honorable
mention recognition from the MIAA coaches. A 5-7 outside hitter, Schultz is a
graduate of Escondido Calvin Christian High School.
Calvin finished in second place in the MIAA regular season standings with a
13-3 conference record and then captured the MIAA Tournament Championship last
Saturday. Currently 28-8 overall, the Knights are scheduled to face Hiram
(28-4) in a first round match of the NCAA III Tournament Thursday afternoon at
3:30 p.m.
HENDRICKS/DEGROOT NAMED MIAA VOLLEYBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK
For the second time this year, Calvin College senior Christine Hendricks has
been named MIAA Player of the Week. A 5-11 middle-hitter, Hendricks averaged
4.73 kills, 4.93 digs and 1.18 blocks per game while compiling a .363 attack
percentage in conference tournament play. In the championship final against
Hope, she had 25 digs, 19 kills and five blocks.
Meanwhile, Calvin freshman libero Lauren DeGroot has been named MIAA Specialty
Player of the Week for the first time in her career. DeGroot averaged 4.64 digs
in conference tournament play last week. In the championship, she totaled 25
digs to break the Calvin single-season record for digs previously held by her
older sister Kristen.
JOE WESTRA NAMED MIAA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
For the second time in his collegiate career and for the first time this
season, Calvin senior goalkeeper Joe Westra has been named MIAA Defensive
Player of the Week in men's soccer. A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate
of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Westra backstopped Calvin to shutout
victories over Hope and Kalamazoo last week, lowering his season
goals-against-average to 0.82. The shutout victories were the 32nd and 33rd of
Westra's collegiate career. In a 4-0 win at Hope last Wednesday, Westra came
up with six saves. He followed with five saves in a 5-0 win over Kalamazoo
Saturday afternoon.
Calvin finished the MIAA regular season with an 11-3-0 conference mark that
was good for second place in the league standings. Calvin is currently 15-4-1
overall and is scheduled to host Edgewood College (WI) Wednesday at 1:00 p.m.
at Marvin A Zuidema Soccer Field.
DAN AULTMAN SIGNS PROFESSIONAL BASKETBALL CONTRACT
Recent Calvin College graduate Dan Aultman has realized a life-long dream. A
native of Ludington and a graduate of Mason County Central High School, Aultman
has signed a professional basketball contract to play with a team in Norway.
Terms of the contract were not disclosed. Aultman is scheduled to depart for
Norway on Tuesday morning.
A 6-8 forward, Aultman scored 1,005 points in his two-year Calvin career,
becoming just the second two-year player to score more than 1,000 points as a
Calvin men's basketball player. Dan Davis was the first to do so in a
two-year span, hitting the 1,000 point plateau from 1987-to-1989.
Aultman was a two-time first team All-MIAA selection at Calvin and a two-time
NABC All-District selection. He helped lead Calvin to a pair of MIAA
Tournament crowns, two trips to the NCAA III Tournament and berth in the 2005
NCAA III Final Four.
Aultman joins the growing list of former Calvin men's basketball players to
play professionally overseas. Former Calvin men's basketball players who
have played overseas include Mark Veenstra (Germany), Steve Honderd
(Spain/France), Chris Knoester (Malta), Darrell Van Laare (Australia), Russ
Iwema (France), Ebong Eka (Switzerland/France), Scott Plaisier (Netherlands),
Aaron Winkle (Denmark) and Jeremy Veenstra (France).
