CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR NOVEMBER 8, 2005

CALVIN MEN'S SOCCER PLAYERS RECEIVE ALL-MIAA HONORS

The All-MIAA men's soccer teams have been released and six Calvin players have been so honored.

Named to the All-MIAA first team are seniors Kurt Visker and Peter Malefyt and junior Nick Capisciolto. Named to the All-MIAA second team are seniors Joe Westra and Levi Kool and junior Maurice Wright.

Visker is making his fourth straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team and is just the sixth individual in MIAA men's soccer history to receive the honor four straight years. He is also the fourth individual in Calvin men's soccer history to do so and the first since Joey Barone was a four-time first team All-MIAA selection from 1988-1991. Other four-time first team All-MIAA selections from Calvin were Jim Johnson (1970-1973) and Mark Recker (1976-1979).

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Visker split time between the midfield and defensive backfield this fall. In conference play, he picked up five goals, one assist and 11 points.

Malefyt is from Lansing and is a graduate of Lansing Christian High School. A sweeper back on defense, Malefyt is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA first team. This fall, Malefyt anchored a Calvin defense that led the MIAA in defensive scoring average as the Knights allowed just nine goals in 14 league games. Malefyt also scored a pair of goals in league play * both by way of penalty kick. His penalty kick at Adrian on September 27 was the game-winner in a 2-1 sudden-death overtime victory.

Capisciolto is from Hudsonville and is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. A three-year starter in the midfield, Capisciolto is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA first team. Capisciolto finished third in the MIAA scoring race with 25 points in league play, netting six goals and collecting 13 assists as he finished tied for the league lead in that category.

A four-year starter in goal, Westra is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. In league play, Westra posted a goals-against-average of 0.72 with 37 saves and collected six shutout victories.

Kool is from Holland and is a graduate of Holland Christian High School. A midfielder, Kool picked up two goals and six assists in league play to finish tied for fourth in the league in assists.

Wright is from Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Wauwatosa East High School. Like Visker, Wright also split time between midfield and the defensive backfield this fall. In league play, he picked up two goals and one assist for a total of five points.
Calvin finished the MIAA season with an 11-3-0 conference record that was good for a second place league finish. Calvin is currently 15-4-1 overall and is preparing for a first round NCAA III Tournament game tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Edgewood College (WI) at 1:00 p.m.

Calvin players that received honorable mention recognition from the MIAA coaches were seniors John VanWylen (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA/Hopewell HS), junior Nathan Kooi (Lynden, WA/Lynden Christian HS) and sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS).
