CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (Part One) FOR NOVEMBER 6, 2005
Weima and Deur Shatter Calvin Records to Lead Women's Swim/Diving Team to Dual
Meet Victories
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin women's swimming and diving team completed a big weekend with
non-conference dual meet victories over Wheaton and Grand Valley State Saturday
afternoon at the Bergsma Natatorium.
Saturday's competition served as a triangular and the Calvin women defeated
Division II Grand Valley State 127-114 and Wheaton 129-106. Grand Valley
defeated Wheaton 139-96. The Calvin victories came on the heels of a 147-95
conference win over Olivet Friday night.
The Calvin women are now 4-0 on the young season and off to their best dual
meet start in school history.
Calvin received a pair of record-setting performances on Saturday as freshman
diver Erica Deur of Holland Christian High School won the one-meter diving
competition with a school record total of 256.45 points while junior Becky
Weima of Grand Rapids Christian High School took second in the 1,000 freestyle
with a school record time of 10:44.27.
Deur's one-meter diving score broke the previous Calvin record of 255.65 set
by Kara Davidson in 2000. Her total was also an NCAA III qualifying score.
Deur also took first place on the three-meter board, compiling a total of
253.80 points.
Weima's time in the 1,000 freestyle broke her own school record in the
event. Her previous best time in the 1,000 freestyle had been 10:45.99. Weima
currently holds six individual Calvin records. Weima also took first place in
the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:56.90 and in the 100 freestyle with an NCAA
III conditional qualifying time of 53.16.
Also picking up an individual victory for the Calvin women on Saturday was
junior Alex Wilson (Ellsworth, OH) in the 200 breaststroke with a time of
2:30.21. Senior Abby Johnson of Grand Haven High School also turned in a
strong effort in the 200 IM, placing second with a time of 2:16.69. Sophomore
Stephanie Duncan (Long Grove, IL) also took second in the 500 freestyle with a
time of 5:26.69. In addition, Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of Duncan,
freshman Cara VanWoerkom (Calvin Christian HS), freshman Julie Wolfe
(Westerville, OH) and junior Liz Ingebrigtsen (Bensvenville, IL) took second
with a time of 3:41.71 with Wheaton taking first in 3:38.92. Grand Valley's
relay team finished one second behind Calvin's second place effort however,
allowing the Knights to clinch the dual meet win over the Lakers.
In the men's competition, Calvin fell to Wheaton 142.5-84.5 and to Grand
Valley State 148-84 to fall to 1-3 in dual meet competition. Nevertheless, the
Knights came up with a number of sterling individual efforts.
In the 200 freestyle, Calvin junior Peter Tuuk of Grand Rapids Christian High
School came up with a season-best and first place time of 1:48.77, edging Grand
Valley State's Dan Kimble by four-hundredths of a second.
Calvin junior Andrew Resseguie of Holland Christian High School then took
first place in the 100 freestyle (49.25) with Tuuk taking third (49.62).
Freshman Jack Ryfiak of Grand Rapids Christian High School also turned in a
notable afternoon taking second on both the one-meter (228.90) and three-meter
(223.70) boards.
In addition, Calvin's 400 freestyle relay team of senior Luke Bagnall
(Marshalltown, IA), sophomore John Boumgarden (Naperville, IL), Tuuk and Andrew
Resseguie just missed a first place swim, taking second with a time of 3:16.69,
just two-tenths of a second behind Wheaton's first place team.
Both Calvin teams return to action next Saturday when they compete in a
quadrangular at Eastern Michigan University with teams from Kalamazoo, Case
Western Reserve and Denison also competing.
