Calvin 13, Hope 4

For the Hope College Flying Dutchmen the third time was not the charm on
Saturday.

Calvin and Hope squared off in men's ice hockey in a matinee tilt at VanAndel
Arena in Grand Rapids, a game that marked the third time already the two teams
have met this season.

And while the first two games of the year were closely contested affairs, the
third match-up of 2005-2006 was all Calvin as the Knights lit the lamp three
times in the first five minutes of play and rolled to a 13-4 victory

Calvin coach Mike Petrusma saw his team improve to 9-1-1 overall with the
victory heading into a pair of games next weekend. He was surprised by the
final score, but paid kudos both to his club and Hope's squad after the game.

"We were flying early," said Petrusma, who led Calvin to an ACHA national
championship two years ago. "Scoring as quick as we did certainly got Hope
back on their heels and I'm not sure they were really able to recover from that
early deficit. They battled back, but it was a great start for us and a tough
start for them. I was surprised certainly by the final score but sometimes you
never know with this rivalry."

Calvin's first goal came as fans were just settling into their seats as Nate
Heuker converted a pass from Emery Lovse just 80 seconds into the first period
for an early 1-0 lead. Just 1:13 later senior Max Sieplinga scored the first
of five goals he'd have for the game with helpers from Clay Verkaik and Craig
Baker. Calvin's third goal came just 2:45 after that as Nick Robinson
converted at 5:15 from Sieplinga and Baker.

Hope did tally three goals in the first period but Calvin also added three
more to the three it had in the first five minutes of play and the Knights led
6-3 after one stanza. Calvin's sixth goal of the period came with just 28
seconds left to play as Nick Verkuyl beat the Hope goaler with a wicked snap
shot from the faceoff circle to the top glove-side corner.

Hope scored first in the second period to cut the deficit to 6-4, but then
Calvin ran off seven unanswered goals, including five straight in the second
period to take an 11-4 lead after 40 minutes of play. Two of those
second-period goals came with Calvin shorthanded and Sieplinga did the damage
on both ocasions. For the game Sieplinga added three assists to his five goals
for a tidy eight-point afternoon.

Clay Verkaik also had a nice game for the Knights with two goals and three
assists. In the nets for Calvin was junior Greg Clark who had a solid
afternoon, including several sharp saves in the second period with the game's
outcome still up for grabs.

The Calvin-Hope game came on the heels of a Calvin alumni game that saw some
30 former Calvin icers pull the sweaters on again. Following the Calvin-Hope
game the Grand Rapids Griffins took on the Syracuse Crunch in an American
Hockey League tilt that saw Grand Rapids post a 3-2 come-from-behind win. One
ticket was good for all three games.
