CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR OCTOBER 23, 2005
VOGEL NAMED MIAA VOLLEYBALL PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GRAND RAPIDS - For the second time this year Calvin junior outside hitter
Lorilyn Vogel has been named the MIAA's Player of the Week in women's
volleyball. A native of Orange City, Iowa, and a graduate of Unity Christian
(IA) High School, Vogel led Calvin to conference victories over St. Mary's,
Adrian and Albion last week as the Knights improved to 20-8 overall and to 11-3
in MIAA competition.
In Calvin's three matches last week, Vogel averaged 5.7 kills, 1.0 blocks
and 1.0 digs per game behind a .400 attack percentage. Vogel was particularly
affective in Saturday victories over Adrian and Albion as she chalked up 18
kills and a .562 attack percentage in a three-game win over Adrian and followed
with 24 kills and a .351 attack percentage in a four-game win over Albion.
Vogel is currently second in the MIAA in attack percentage (.341) and third in
kills-per-game (4.66).
Calvin closes out its MIAA regular season schedule this week when it hosts
Tri-State Tuesday at 6:30 and Olivet on Friday at 2:00 p.m. Calvin's Friday
match against Olivet will also count as a first round match in Calvin's own
Midwest Invitational.

CALVIN CLUB ICE HOCKEY TEAM THIRD AT NORTHWOOD SETH SCHUPAN TOURNAMENT
MIDLAND - The Calvin ice hockey team took third at the Northwood Seth Schupan
Tournament last weekend, posting a 2-1 tournament record. The Knights are now
5-2 on the young season.
Calvin opened the Seth Schpan Tournament with a 10-0 win over Robert Morris
College Thursday night. Senior Nick VerKuyl (Whitby, ON) and sophomore Clay
Verkaik (Grand Rapids Christian HS) both had a hat-trick for the Knights in the
win.
On Friday, Calvin suffered a heart-breaking loss to the defending Division III
club champion University of Colorado in an overtime shootout. Calvin held a
3-2 lead behind goals from VerKaik, senior Max Sieplinga (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) and freshman Lucas Huyser-Wierenga (Edmont, AB) but Colorado
scored a game-tying goal with just one second left in regulation. Colorado
then went on to win the game in an overtime shootout.
The loss dropped Calvin into Saturday's consolation final against rival Hope
and the Knights came up with a 5-2 victory over the Flying Dutchmen. VerKuyl
and Sieplinga both had two goals apiece while freshman Jeff DeKorne (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) also picked up a goal. The victory was Calvin's second
of the year against Hope.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Kalamazoo College at the
Jolly Roger Ice Club. The Knights will also host Oakland University Saturday
at the Jolly Roger Ice Club. Friday's game is set to begin at 10:00 p.m.
while Saturday's game is set for 9:00 p.m.
