GRAND RAPIDS - With time ticking down on its MIAA regular season schedule,
Calvin picked up an important 3-0 win over visiting Tri-State University
Tuesday afternoon at Marvin A. Zuidema Soccer Field.
The victory keeps Calvin (13-3-1 overall, 9-2-0 MIAA) six points behind
league-leading Hope (11-0-0 MIAA) with three league games left to play.
Calvin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick goal by senior Peter
Malefyt (Lansing Christian HS) eight minutes in. The penalty kick was created
when a Tri-State defensive back punched a corner kick by Calvin junior Nick
Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS). The punch resulted in a hand-ball call and
Malefyt followed with his third goal of the year including his second by way of
a penalty kick.
Sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) made it a two-goal advantage four
minutes into the second half, accepting a lead pass from freshman Michael
Holwerda (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and whipping in his team-leading 11th goal
of the year. Calvin continued to pepper the Tri-State goal through the
remainder of the second half and broke through again with just 3:22 left in
regulation when Capisciolto jumped on a loose ball and ripped in a shot from 15
yards out.
Calvin finished the game with a 23-7 shots at goal advantage including 15-3 in
the second half. Senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was
superb for the Knights in nets, stopping a pair of quality scoring chances by
Tri-State in the first half and finishing the game with two saves.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Olivet for a 2:00
p.m. match.
