Calvin 7, Adrian 1
GRAND RAPIDS - The Calvin College Knights (12-3-1) defeated the Adrian College Bulldogs (2-12-1) in convincing fashion Saturday by a score of 7-1. Adrian junior goalkeeper Ryan O'Keefe (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids CC) was kept busy by the Knight offense all day as he had 17 saves. Calvin junior Nick Capisciolto (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) had a career day by knocking in two goals while also collecting three assists.
The first goal came about 17 minutes into the first half when Capisciolto headed it into the goal off of a beautiful crossing pass from freshman Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) who was given the assist on the play. 14 minutes later, freshman Anthony Gratson (Rochester/Rochester Stoney Creek HS), 10 seconds after entering the game, beat the goalie to the ball and punched it into an open net. Capisciolto made the play happen and was given his first assist of the day. Not more than a minute later, sophomore A.J. Dufendach (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Northern) stole the ball from the defender and blasted it in unassisted to the far post. But Adrian answered with their first and only goal with eight minutes to go in the half when Chris Kelley (Royal Oak/Oakland CC) knocked it in off of a direct kick from about the 25 yard line unassisted.
Two minutes later, the Knights struck again when sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) put the ball in the net off of a rebound with an assist given to Capisciolto. Twenty seconds later, senior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) scored with Capisciolto collecting his third assist of the day. With a little over two minutes remaining in the half, Capisciolto hit a hard shot to the far post to put the Knights up 6-1 and to gather his third goal of the game. The assist was given to junior Maurice Wright (Wauwatosa, WI/Wauwatosa East).
The second half proved to be less eventful as only one goal was scored either way. That goal came 10 minutes in with senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewall, PA/Hopewall) scoring on an unassisted direct shot to the goal.
The game also proved to be a physical game with five yellow cards being handed out.
Calvin will play host to Tri-State (6-7-1) on Tuesday, October 25, for its next contest and will look to continue the winning formula in hopes of making a late-season run but will need some help as Hope (MIAA 10-0-0) stands atop the division two games ahead of the Knights.
