Women's Soccer Holds On For 1-0 Win at St. Mary's

SOUTH BEND, IN * A trip to St. Mary's for a women's soccer game is always perilous. That theme proved to be true once again for the Calvin women's soccer team as it held off an upset-minded St. Mary's team 1-0 Friday afternoon.

Ranked 20th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll, Calvin (13-2-1 overall, 12-0-0 MIAA) remains alone in first place in the MIAA standings with the victory, moving six points ahead of second place Hope (10-0-0) which can move back to within three points of the Knights with a win over Olivet Saturday. Calvin is scheduled to host Hope next Wednesday in a game scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

Calvin entered Friday's game with St. Mary's ranked second nationally in scoring offense, averaging 4.57 goals-per-game. Friday's match turned into a defensive struggled however with the only goal of the game coming in the 57th minute of play as junior Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) banged in a shot from the 10-yard line amid a crowd of players. The goal was the 13th of the year. Freshman Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL) drew her ninth assist of the year on the play.

Over the last four years, Calvin is 2-0-2 at St. Mary's with both of its victories coming by one-goal margins. Calvin is 5-0-3 against St. Mary's over the last four years with four of Calvin's five victories in the skein coming by two goals or less.

Calvin held a 10-2 shots at goal advantage over the host Belles (8-7-1 overall, 7-5-1 MIAA) with senior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) picking up two saves for the Knights in goal.
