Calvin 3, St. Mary's 0

GRAND RAPIDS - In a three game victory over conference opponent St. Mary's,
Calvin upped its record to 18-8 and 9-3 in the MIAA. This puts the Knights in
close contention for second place in the MIAA with Alma (10-3). Saint Mary's
fell to 9-13 and 3-9 in the MIAA.

In game one, Calvin outscored the Belles 16-6 before St. Mary's called the
first timeout. Calvin then went on to finish the game with a 14-5 streak,
gaining a 30-11 victory.

Game two looked much the same. However, the Knights had trouble finishing off
the match, letting the Belles score four points between Calvin's 29th and
30th points. The Knights finally prevailed, winning 30-14.

Game three started off with a 10-1 Calvin streak. However, St. Mary's
managed to break the Knights' run, and scoring was back and forth until
Calvin went on a 10-3 run to defeat St. Mary's 30-13.

St. Mary's setter Amanda David suffered a broken finger during game one,
giving the Belles a big disadvantage.

But the Knights still deserved the victory, with 44 kills and 41 digs among
the players. Leading Calvin was junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity
Christian) with 15 kills. Sophomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central)
added 9 kills, while seniors Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) and
Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian) each had 6 kills and 8
digs. Freshman Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian)
contributed 14 digs. Sophomore Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian)
had a solid 40 assists and five digs.

"We are trying to focus on our side and keep down the mistakes. Our players
came into the game with intensity tonight and maintained it," said head coach
Amber Warners.

Calvin now heads into a long home stand with an MIAA triangular with Adrian
(11:00) and Albion (3:00) on Saturday, a match against Tri-State on next
Tuesday evening at 6:30, and the annual Midwest Invitational Tournament next
weekend, Oct. 28 and 29. Coach Warners said, "I am so happy to be off the
bus and to be playing on our home court. It is great to play where we are
comfortable and where the fans are on our side." Tonight was only Calvin's
third home match of the season.

MEN'S SOCCER

Albion 2, Calvin 0

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin suffered a damaging 2-0 defeat to visiting Albion
Wednesday afternoon at Marvin A. Zuidema Soccer Field. The loss drops Calvin
six points behind league-leading Hope in the MIAA standings.

Ranked 18th nationally, Calvin (11-3-1 overall, 7-2-0 MIAA) came out flat in
the opening minutes and the visiting Britons (9-5-1 overall, 4-4-1 MIAA) made
the Knights pay, scoring two goals in the opening 13 minutes. Both goals were
scored by Albion senior Eric Johnson and came just a minute-and-a-half apart.

Johnson's first goal game in the 13th minute of play as he collected a chip
from teammate Chris Himes, whirled on a defender and beat Calvin senior
goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a low hard shot to the
short side. Just over a minute later, Johnson took a feed at the Calvin
25-yard line and blasted a shot in the top right-hand shelf with Westra having
no chance on the play.

Stunned early, Calvin fought back with several shots in the final 15 minutes
of the first half but did not score. Calvin came up with nine shots in the
second half but continued to come up empty as the Britons did an affective job
of playing keep-away with the ball for big chunks of time.

Calvin finished with a 15-8 shots at goal advantage but did not score for the
first time this year. Westra had four saves in nets for the Knights while
senior Tavio Palazzolo had six saves for the Britons.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Adrian at 2:00 p.m.
