Women's Soccer Blanks Hornets 9-0 - Climbs Back Into National Rankings
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 9, Kalamazoo
GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin remained on top of the MIAA standings with a 9-0 victory
over visiting Kalamazoo College Tuesday afternoon at Marvin A. Zuidema Field.
The victory was Calvin's 11th league victory of the year without a defeat
including its tenth straight conference win by shutout. At 11-0-0 in league
play, Calvin remains three points ahead of second place Hope (10-1-0) in the
league standings. Hope defeated Alma 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday.
Over its last three games, Calvin (12-2-1 overall) has outscored the
opposition 34-0.
Calvin also moved back into the national rankings on Tuesday afternoon after
slipping out of the national poll last week. The Knights are ranked 20th in
the Division III Top-25 poll. The complete poll can be found at:

Five players scored for Calvin on Tuesday with three notching two-goal games.
Junior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) had two goals and three assists
for the Knights while freshmen Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL) and Michelle
Koele (Denver, CO) both had two goals and one assist. Junior Jill Capel (Unity
Christian HS) and freshman Elise Willett (Grand Junction, CO) also had one goal
each. Calvin's final goal was credited as an "own goal" deflected off
the back of a Kalamazoo defender.
Freshmen Brittney Talbert (Whitefish Bay, WI) and Jessica Vegter (Unity
Christian HS) also had one assist apiece for the Knights.
Calvin led 4-0 at halftime and held a 38-4 shots at goal advantage. Senior
Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) went the first 83 minutes in goal for the
Knights and picked up one save while freshman Kristina VanderWal (Western
Michigan Christian HS) was in nets for the final seven minutes for Calvin.
Kalamazoo sophomore goalkeeper Monisha Berkowski went the first 68 minutes for
the Hornets and picked up nine saves. Jennie Smith came on in the 69th minute
of play and picked up one save.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to St. Mary's for a match
scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m. (EST).
MEN'S SOCCER
The Calvin men's soccer team is again ranked in the Division III Top-25 poll
released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Knights
are ranked 18th in this week's poll, down one spot from last week.
The men's soccer team is currently 11-2-1 overall and 7-1-0 in league play.
The Knights are scheduled to host Albion at 4:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon at
Marvin A. Zuidema Field.
