VOLLEYBALL

ELMHURST, IL * A weekend trip to the Elmhurst Invitational resulted in a 2-2 record for Calvin. The Knights are now 16-8 on the 2005 season.

Calvin opened the tournament on Friday with a 30-24, 30-26, 30-19 to host Elmhurst, ranked 19th in the latest Division III Top-25 poll conducted by the American Volleyball Coaches Association.

Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) had 13 kills and three digs in the loss to the Blue Jays while senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) had 10 kills and 12 digs. Sophomore Molly Krikke added eight kills while senior Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA) had 21 digs and nine kills. Sophomore setter Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) also had 40 assists and 10 digs.

Calvin then came back to defeat Dominican University (IL) behind 22 kills from Vogel. Freshman Lauren DeGroot (Tulare, CA) had 18 digs while Hendricks had nine kills and Zondervan 38 assists and 11 digs.

On Saturday, Calvin opened play in upset fashion with a 25-30, 19-30, 30-23, 30-22, 15-12 victory over Wisconsin-Platteville, ranked 23rd in the latest Division III Top-25 poll. The victory marked Calvin's second victory of the year against a nationally-ranked opponent as it also owns a victory against (then) 12th-ranked Ohio Northern earlier this fall.

In the comeback win over Wisconsin-Platteville, Vogel tallied 23 kills, eight digs and six blocks as she flirted with a triple-double. Schultz picked up 13 kills and 19 digs while Krikke had eight kills, six digs and nine blocks. Zondervan chalked up 53 assists and 16 digs while freshman Jessica Garlick (Kalamazoo Christian HS) tallied nine kills and six digs. Defense was a key to the Calvin win as the Knights picked up 25 blocks and 105 digs in the five-game marathon.

Calvin then dropped a 25-30, 30-25, 30-22, 30-26 decision to a talented Carthage team that received votes in this week's Division III Top-25 poll but did not crack the top-25 rankings.

Vogel had 16 kills in the loss to Carthage while Krikke had 11 kills and nine blocks. DeGroot chipped in with 26 digs while Hendricks had 11 digs and 10 kills and Zondervan 48 assists and 14 digs.

Calvin returns to action next Wednesday when it hosts St. Mary's at 7:00 p.m. in an MIAA conference match.

ICE HOCKEY EDGES HOPE/FALLS TO DAVENPORT

Calvin 8, Hope 6
Davenport 7, Calvin 3

The first meeting between the Calvin and Hope club ice hockey teams took place on Friday night and Calvin skated away with a come-from-behind 8-6 victory. Friday's game was a first round tournament game hosted by Davenport University at the Federal Ice Center in Grand Rapids. Friday's game was played in front of a capacity crowd. The two rivals are scheduled to meet again on November 5 in a Michigan Collegiate Hockey Conference game at the Van Andel Arena at 2:30 p.m.

In Friday night's game, Calvin fell behind 3-0 and later trailed 5-3 at the end of one period of play. Calvin trailed just 6-5 at the end of two periods and then erupted for three third period goals to claim the win.

Seniors Max Sieplinga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and Nick VerKuyl (Whitby, ON) along with freshman Lucas Huyser-Wierenga (Edmonton, AB) had two goals apiece while sophomore Clay VerKaik (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Jeff Crawford (Northville, Mich.) also scored for the Knights.

The win vaulted Calvin (3-1) into the tournament championship game on Saturday but Calvin's bid for a tournament title came up short as the host Panthers of Davenport handed Calvin a 7-3 defeat. Sieplinga had two of Calvin's three goals while senior Dan DeKorne (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also scored for the Knights.
