CROSS COUNTRY

OSHKOSH, WI * The Knights competed in Wisconsin Saturday at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational.

The women's 6k race featured four nationally-ranked teams in fourth-ranked Washington University (Mo.), Calvin College (14th), UW-Stevens Point (15th), and UW-Oshkosh (18th).

These teams made up the top four finishers at the meet, as Washington placed first with 37 points, and UW-Stevens Point (61 points), UW-Oshkosh (66 points), and Calvin College (69 points) finished in a close second, third, and fourth. Hope College came in fifth place with 154 points.

Leading the way for Calvin were senior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) in fifth place with a time of 22:24 and junior Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE/Hillcrest Academy [Nigeria]) in sixth with a time of 22:28. Freshman Calah Schlabach (St. Michaels, AZ/St. Michaels) was Calvin's third finisher in 17th place in 23:17.5, followed closely by junior Laura Holtrop (Rockville, MD/Chapelgate Christian Academy),18th place, in 23:18.4. Rounding off Calvin's top seven finishers were sophomore Christina Overbeck (Seattle, WA/Bellevue Christian) in 25th place overall (23rd adjusted place) with a time of 23:37.5, freshman Kelly Edwards (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc) in 34th overall (29th adjusted) in 23:56, and freshman Emily Arkus (Tinley Park, IL/ Victor J. Andrew) in 36th overall (31st adjusted) with a 23:58.1 finish.

Head Coach Nancy Meyer said, "We ran a solid race. We would've liked to place higher than fourth, but being only eight points out of second, we can't really complain." Meyer also commented on the individual accomplishments: "Camille ran great again today, Lydia did great hanging in with Camille, and freshmen Schlabach, Edwards, and Arkus placed high."

Jenna Mitcheler and Teresa Stanley from UW-Stevens Point took first and second place with times of 21:41.8 and 21:43.6, respectively.

The Calvin men (ranked first nationally) completed another outstanding chapter to their familiar story, capturing the meet title with only 19 points, distancing themselves from second place and seventh-ranked UW-Oshkosh (75 points) by almost 60 points, and defending the first place finish they posted last year at this invitational.

Also among the 12 men's teams that ran the 8k race were 11th-ranked Augustana College and Carleton College of Minnesota (ranked 24th in the nation), and local Aquinas College which is ranked second in the NAIA. Aquinas took third place behind UW-Oshkosh with 100 points.

Junior Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM/Home School) ran another outstanding race, placing first with a final time of 24:30. Following closely with a time of 24:33 was junior Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON/Smithville District Christian) who finished second.

According to Coach Brian Diemer, the finish between the two Knights was a close one. "Harrison gained ten meters on everyone with 1200 left to go and held on to the end; he had a fantastic race. But Finnegan passed him up in the last 100 meters."

In fourth was sophomore Jon Gries (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion) in 24:54.6. Finishing fifth in 25:03.7 was freshman Jed Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville). In ninth place overall (seventh place with adjustment) was sophomore Bill Reynolds (Newtown Square, PA/Deleware Country Christian) with a time of 25:11.7. In sixth and seventh for Calvin were sophomore Tad Hulst (Zeeland/Zeeland), 13th place overall, 10th place adjusted, in 25:21.2 and junior Ben Hammer (Williamsburg/Elk Rapids) in 19th place (16th adjusted) with a time of 25:31.3. Also notable was senior Tyler Zwagerman's (Holland/Holland Christian) 21st place finish of 25:33.8.

"This is Gries' first time under 25 minutes, a great accomplishment for him. Bill Reynolds ran great and Hammer and Zwagerman solidify our depth," said Diemer, "but we still have more to do. We can't get away from our business."

Coach Hoekstra also praised the men's racing today. "They all race like they are seniors, have incredible instincts, and make great movies. It's amazing that a team this young can do this."

Calvin now has two weeks to get ready for the MIAA Championships which will be held at Kalamazoo on Saturday, October 29th.
