WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, Hope 0
HOLLAND * Calvin extended its shutout string to five straight games and took over sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings with a 2-0 victory at Hope Wednesday afternoon at the Buys Athletic Field.
Ranked fourth in the latest set of Great Lakes Regional rankings, Calvin (7-1-1 overall, 6-0 MIAA) picked up its first victory at Hope since the 2001 season with Wednesday's outcome and snapped a 25-match unbeaten streak that Hope had carried at home against MIAA opponents.
Calvin gained the momentum early as junior Jill Capel (Unity Christian HS) pounced on a rebound shot just 12 minutes in and ripped a blast into the top right shelf of the goal to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. Capel then gave Calvin a 2-0 lead with just over 11:48 remaining in the first half as she took a well placed pass in the slot from junior Sarah Weesies (Kalamazoo Christian HS) and drove a low hard shot past Hope goalkeeper Holly Nestle and into the left-hand corner of the net.
The two-goal lead stood up the rest of the way as the Knights moved three points ahead of Hope in the MIAA standings.
Calvin finished the game with a 17-8 shots at goal advantage. Nestle had 10 saves for Hope while Calvin senior goalkeeper Linda Heilman (South Christian HS) picked up five saves in gaining her fifth shutout victory of the season and the 12th of her collegiate career.
With the pair of goals, Capel raised her season total to 10 while Weesies picked up her fourth assist of the year in setting up Capel's second goal.
Calvin currently owns a five-game win streak and a seven-game unbeaten streak. The Knights have not allowed a goal in their last 476 minutes of play.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Albion at noon at Calvin Field.
