ADRIAN - 10th-ranked Calvin narrowly escaped an upset loss Tuesday afternoon as the Knights (7-1-1 overall, 3-0-0 MIAA) claimed a 2-1 double-overtime victory at Adrian.
Calvin sophomore Jared Litty (Hudsonville HS) scored his sixth goal of the year with 1:24 left in regulation to tie the score at one. Litty's goal was assisted by junior Nick Capisciolto (Unity Christian HS).
Litty's goal sent the match into overtime. Neither team score during the first 10 minutes of overtime but in the second minute of overtime number-two, senior Matt Cosnek (Hopewell, PA) drew a penalty kick for the Knights as he was taken down in the Adrian penalty box by a defender. Calvin senior Peter Malefyt (Lansing Christian HS) was elected to take the penalty kick and Malefyt made no mistake, burying his shot into the back of the net to give the Knights the pulse-pounding victory.
Adrian (2-6-1 overall, 0-3-0 MIAA) took a 1-0 lead on a goal Eric Drake in the 57th minute of play.
Calvin held a 28-8 shots at goal advantage in the contest but Adrian goalkeeper Ryan O'Keefe kept the host Bulldogs in the game with 13 saves. Calvin senior goalkeeper Joe Westra (Grand Rapids Christian HS) was credited with three saves in gaining the victory for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it journeys to Tri-State University for a 3:00 p.m. (EST) game.
Calvin's national ranking (10th) is an improvement of one spot from last week's poll. Calvin is one of two nationally-ranked teams from the MIAA in this week's poll as Hope is ranked 24th. Knights Ranked Fourth in Great Lakes Regional Poll
Calvin is ranked fourth in this week's Great Lakes Regional poll by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The ranking is an improvement of one spot from last week's poll. The regional poll can be found on the NSCAA web site at: http://www.nscaa.com/rank/20050927/D3W/0/index.html
Calvin is slated to face rival Hope Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. Hope is ranked seventh in this week's regional poll. Both teams are 5-0 in the MIAA with first place in the league standings at stake. The game will be broadcast via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: http://www.calvin.edu/sports

Calvin d. Adrian 3-1 (30-25, 28-30, 30-23, 30-25)
ADRIAN - Defeating Adrian in four games Tuesday night, the Knights slip into third place behind Hope and Alma in the MIAA Conference, with a 11-5 overall record and a 4-2 MIAA record. Adrian (11-3 overall, 3-2 MIAA) is fourth.
Calvin won the first game 30-25, then lost the second 28-30, but regrouped to take the third and fourth games 30-23 and 30-25.
Junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA/Unity Christian) contributed a game-high and matched a season-high 23 kills as well as 1 block. Sohpomore Molly Krikke (Greenwich, OH/South Central), who on Sept. 17th first reached the season-high record of 23 kills in four games, also contributed 14 kills and 8 blocks against Adrian tonight. Senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH/Turpin) had 17 kills and 2 blocks. Calvin's attack totals were 75 kills, 5 aces, 12 blocks.
Sophomore Katie Zondervan (Lakewood, CA/Valley Christian) had a season-high 70 assists and also contributed 2 kills, 2 service aces, and 2 blocks. Senior Katie Schultz (Escondido, CA/ Escondido Calvin Christian) contributed 17 digs, while freshman Lauren De Groot (Tulare, CA/Central Valley Christian) had 15.
Totals for Adrian were 59 kills, 2 aces, and 10 blocks. Lindsey Eshelman led with 21 kills, Jenny Carlson had 15 kills, and Abby Sikora had 47 assists. Adrian's Samantha Mercy had 26 digs, while Eshelman contributed 20.
Calvin's first home match this season is scheduled for Thursday, September 29 against conference opponent Kalamazoo. Calvin will then face conference opponent Albion during Saturday's away game.

Knights Sixth at MIAA Outing #6
HOLLAND - The MIAA men's golf race continued to tighten as the sixth league outing of the year was held Tuesday afternoon at the Wuskowhan Golf Club with Hope College serving as host.
Calvin took sixth at the outing with a team score of 318, two strokes behind fifth place Alma and five strokes behind Albion, Adrian and Olivet which tied for third place. With the score, Calvin slips into sixth place in the overall team standings, just three strokes behind fifth place Adrian and nine strokes behind fourth place Alma.
Meanwhile Tri-State took first place team honors on Tuesday with a team and course record score of 290, just two strokes ahead of second place Hope. Tri-State holds a slim three-stroke lead over Hope for first place in the overall MIAA standings.
Calvin's top individual finisher on Tuesday was junior Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who fired a round of 70 that was good for third place individually. TenBrink's score moved him into*.place in the overall MIAA individual standings.
Rounding out Calvin's finishers on Tuesday were freshman Brad Tindall (Vicksburg HS) with a round of 78, junior Tim VanVugt (Brookfield, WI) with a round of 83, freshman Drew Virkus (Kalamazoo Christian HS) with an 87 and junior Jake Wolffis (Western Michigan Christian HS) with an 88.
Tommy Yamoaka of Hope claimed medalist honors on Tuesday with a round of 67.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the seventh MIAA outing of the year. The outing will be hosted by Adrian at the Lenawee Country Club beginning at 1:00 p.m.
