WOOSTER-- Leading 2-0 in the second half, the Knights did not come away with the win. However, Calvin (3-1-1) managed to hold Wooster (2-0-2) at two goals for the tie.
Both teams were scoreless in the first half, but not silent, as each team shot seven times.
Calvin (ranked 2nd in the Great Lakes Region) broke through with a goal off a penalty kick by senior Peter Malefyt (Lansing/Lansing Christian) just over ten minutes into the half. Two minutes later, senior Kurt Visker (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) gave the Knights a 2-0 lead with a blast in to the goal, assisted by senior Levi Kool (Holland/Holland Christian).
The Scots of Wooster (ranked 4th in the Great Lakes Region) had their turn with just under 11 minutes left in regulation time. Brian Conaway converted a penalty kick of his own. With less than six minutes left in the half, Wooster scored again. This time Conaway assisted Mark Ballinger’s goal, tieing the game. Wooster out-shot Calvin in the second half 10-7.
Both teams remained scoreless in the double-overtime, though Calvin saw four shots and Wooster saw five. Calvin’s closest possibility came in the second overtime with less than a minute left as Kool blasted a shot which hit the crossbar but did not find its way into the goal.
Overall, Calvin had 18 shots to Wooster’s 22. Visker accounted for five of those shots, while Kool contributed four. Ten of Wooster’s shots were taken by Conaway.
Calvin goalie senior Joe Westra (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) had six saves and allowed one goal. Freshman goalkeeper Matt Gardner (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington) allowed the other goal. Wooster’s goal keeper David Trelevan had four saves while allowing two goals.
