CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13, 2005

VOLLEYBALL

HOLLAND - Calvin opened its 2005 MIAA campaign in disappointing fashion as the Knights were swept in three games by rival Hope 30-26, 30-22, 30-22 Tuesday night at Hope's Dow Center.

The Hope victory snapped a 10-match losing streak against Calvin dating back to the 2001 season.

The host Flying Dutch (8-2 overall, 2-0 MIAA) proved to be the aggressor throughout the match with the Knights never able to come up with an equalizing intensity.

Hope jumped out to leads in all three games, taking a 7-2 lead in game one, an 8-0 lead in game two and an 8-3 lead in game three. In the first two games, Calvin's longest scoring run was just four points. The Knights (6-1 overall, 0-1 MIAA) were able to string together a five-point run in game three, creeping to within two points on two separate occasions but could never get over the hump as the Flying Dutch pounded out a blistering .348 team hitting percentage. Calvin on the other hand mustered just a .094 hitting percentage as the Knights committed 21 hitting errors in the match.

Senior Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) was a lone bright spot for the Knights with 12 kills, five blocks and an attack percentage of .333.

Hope was led by senior middle-hitter Julie VanderSlice who tallied 18 kills and senior hitter Lindsay Schaap who chalked up 10 kills and five service aces.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it travels to St. Mary's for an MIAA match scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
