OLIVET -- In the MIAA opening game for both Olivet and Calvin, the Knights
defeated Olivet 6-1. Calvin now holds a 2-1 overall record and a 1-0 MIAA
record.

Calvin's first goal came nine minutes into the match, as freshman
mid-fielder Elizabeth Ribbens (Tinley Park, IL/Victor J. Andrew) scored her
first collegiate goal, assisted by senior Kara Zuidema (San Marcos,
CA/Escondido Calvin Christian). Eight minutes later, Junior Sarah Weesies
(Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) scored her third goal of the season, assisted
by junior Jill Capel (Hudsonville/Unity Christian). Capel also assisted the
last goal of the half, a breakaway shot by freshman Jessica Vegter
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian). It was her first goal as a Knight. Calvin had
16 shots in the first half, Olivet had 1.

The second half looked much the same: the Knights shot 12 times, while Olivet
(0-3, 0-1 MIAA) could only find two, one of which snuck past senior goal keeper
Linda Heilman. The goal came within the first two minutes of second-half play,
as Olivet's Chrissy Jamieson, assisted by fellow sophomore Shannah Fisher,
scored from four yards out with a shot to the back corner of the net.

Vegter answered back her second goal of the game, assisted by freshman
Brittney Talbert (Whitefish Bay, WI/Whitefish Bay) to give the Knights a 4-1
lead. Freshman Ashley Bolen (Urbana, IL/Urbana) soon extended the lead to four
and also scored her first Calvin goal, assisted by junior Leah Scholten
(Hudsonville/Unity Christian). With just over eight minutes left, Weesies
scored again (her fourth on the season), assisted by Ribbens. Neither team
scored for the rest of the game, leaving Calvin with the 6-1 win.

Calvin had 28 total shots to Olivet's three. Heilman had two saves in the
game, and has 24 already this season.

The Knights return to play on Saturday, Sept. 10, when they will travel to
face non-conference opponent Madonna at noon. Madonna will enter the game
ranked 11th in the latest NAIA Top-25 poll.

VOLLEYBALL

A cross-town journey to non-conference rival Aquinas resulted in a 31-29,
30-18, 30-20 victory for the Knights of Calvin College as they improved to 6-0
on the young season.

Calvin opened the match back on its heels as the host Saints (5-3) roared out
to a 16-6 lead in game one. Calvin gradually chipped into the Aquinas lead
however and fueled by a 6-1 scoring run, tied the game at 22. Aquinas would
jump back into a 25-22 lead and then a 27-23 advantage only to see Calvin rip
off four straight points to tie the score at 27. Calvin then scored two of the
next three points to take its first lead at 29-28. The Saints came back to tie
the score at 29 but a pair of kills by senior middle-hitter Christine Hendricks
(Cincinnati, OH) allowed the Knights to pull out the two-point victory.

From there, the momentum was all Calvin's as the Knights rolled to the
three-game victory.

"I think we came out a little flat but our defense really got us back into the
match in game one," said Calvin women's volleyball coach Amber Warners after
the match. "We're usually playing for a trophy in a weekend tournament or in
a conference match with the league standings on the line. Tonight we didn't
have that motivation but I told our team we still had a lot to play for. It
took us awhile to get going but once we made the comeback, I was very pleased
with the results."

Calvin was led in the victory by junior Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) who turned in
a sensational all-around performance with 15 kills, seven digs and three
service aces. Hendricks was close behind with 13 kills and six blocks while
junior Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) had 10 kills. Sopphomore Molly Krikke
(Greenwich, OH) added eight kills and a pair of blocks. Freshman libero Lauren
DeGroot (Tulare, CA) was also stellar with 16 digs while sophomore setter Katie
Zondervan (Lakewood, CA) had 44 assists and a pair of digs. Senior Katie
Schultz (Escondido, CA) came off the bench to provide three service aces and 15
digs.

"We have a lot of people who can contribute," said Warners. "We have 12 very
solid players on our roster. I feel confident that I can play any one of them
at a given moment with positive results."

Calvin will now prepare for a key MIAA opener next Tuesday when it travels to
rival Hope for a 7:00 p.m. match at the Hope Dow Center. "It will be a big
match but to be honest, everyone of our league matvches will be big matches
this year," said Warners. "I think we're going to have one of the most
wide-open league races in a long time. We have to take each one of our league
matches one at a time."
