CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPTEMBER 8, 2005
MEN'S GOLF
Calvin opened its 2005 MIAA campaign with a fifth place showing at the first MIAA Tournament of the year. Albion hosted the tournament at the Medalist Golf Club in Marshall.
Calvin posted a fifth place team score of 316 strokes with Tri-State taking first place honors with a score of 301. Adrian and Olivet were next with scores of 308 to finish in a tie for second place while Hope was just a stroke behind in fourth place with a score of 309. Calvin finished six strokes ahead of sixth place Alma. Albion was seventh with a score of 331 while Kalamazoo was eighth with a score of 343.
Calvin's top finisher was junior Jeff TenBrink (Kalamazoo Christian High School) with a round of 75 that left him in a tie for fourth place. Junior Tim VanVugt (Milwaukee, WI) also had a solid afternoon, firing a round of 78 that was good for a tie for 13th place. Freshman Brad Tindall (Vicksburg HS) was Calvin's next finisher with a round of 81 while senior Ryan Fischer (North Haledon, NJ) had an 82 and freshman Drew Virkus (Kalamazoo Christian HS) a round of 87.
Joel Bickel of Tri-State captured medalist honors with a sizzling round of 65.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY NATIONALLY-RANKED
The two-time defending national champion Calvin men's cross country team is ranked third in the Division III Pre-Season Top-25 poll released earlier this week.
Wisconsin-LaCrosse is the top-ranked team. LaCrosse received all eight first place votes in the pre-season poll while North Central is ranked second. Haverford (PA) is ranked fourth.
Calvin will get a chance to see how it matches up with Wisconsin-LaCrosse and North Central on September 17 when it competes at the Midwest Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. North Cenral and Wisconsin-Lacrosse are also scheduled to compete in the race.
