CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JULY 17, 2005

CALVIN SOCCER PLAYERS CREATE OWN BUSINESS

Last fall, Calvin soccer players Joe Westra and John VanWylen combined to help
form one of the top defensives in the nation. Now the two defensive stalwarts
have helped form their own business interest.

Westra and VanWylen along with roommate Drew DeVries have gone into business
for themselves this summer, building ultra-comfortable Adirondack chairs. For
more on their business venture, please read the well-crafted column by Grand
Rapids Press writer Tom Rademacher at:

Westra and VanWylen are both graduates of Grand Rapids Christian High School
while DeVries is a graduate of Unity Christian High School. DeVries was also a
member of the Calvin men's soccer program for one year.

A goalkeeper, Westra received first team All-MIAA and first team Great Lakes
All-Region honors last fall as he collected 14 shutout victories and posted a
goals-against-average of 0.38. Westra's goals-against-average was a new
Calvin single-season record and ranked fifth in the final NCAA III statistics.

A stopper-back on defensive, VanWylen was named to the 2004 All-MIAA second
team. The rugged defender has been selected as a team co-captain for the
upcoming 2005 season along with senior teammate Kurt Visker.

As a team, the 2004 Calvin Knights finished second in shutout percentage
(0.76), picking up 16 shutouts in 21 games. The Knights were also fourth
nationally in goals-against-average (0.32).

Calvin is slated to return all four players from its 2004 defensive unit this
fall. The Knights are scheduled to open the season on September 2 against
Anderson University at the Anderson University Pepsi Classic. For the complete
2005 Calvin men's soccer schedule, please visit the Calvin web site at:

Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the 2004 Calvin men's soccer
team finished 18-2-1 overall and ranked 16th in the final NSCAA Division III
Top-25 rankings. During the year, the Knights captured their first outright
MIAA title since 1987 and gained their first bid to the NCAA III Tournament
since 1991.
