CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR JULY 16, 2005

DETERS COLLECTS FIRST PRO BASEBALL VICTORY

TROY, NY -- Jim Deters has his first professional baseball victory under his
belt. Now the 2005 Calvin graduate will be looking for a few more.

A first-year pitcher for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in the New York-Penn
Class A Short Season League, Deters picked up his first professional win in an
11-4 victory over the host Tri-City Valley Cats in the second game of a
doubleheader Friday night. A graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School,
Deters went five innings, allowed six hits and two runs and struck out three
and walked one.

The victory by Deters (1-1) allowed Mahoning Valley to snap a three-game
losing streak - its losing streak of the year.

In his previous pitching start back on July 9, Deters was credited with a
no-decision in a 7-3 10-inning loss to the Oneonta Tigers. In that game,
Deters had 5.2 innings of work, allowed six hits, three runs including two
which were earned. He also struck out three batters and walked one.

Deters has now started in five games for the Scrappers and owns a sparkling
1.50 earned run average. The 6-4 right-hander leads the Scrappers in innings
pitched (24) and has struck out 11 batters and walked just five.

The Scrappers are currently 12-12 on the year.

The Mahoning Valley Scrappers are an affiliate of the Cleveland Indians. For
