Jeanne Cole Captures MIAA Softball Batting Title

For the first time since 1989, Calvin has an MIAA batting champion in
softball. Calvin junior Jeanne Cole has captured the 2005 MIAA softball
batting title, becoming the first Calvin player to do so since Laurie Hiemstra
achieved the feat in 1989.

A native of Fountain and a graduate of Mason County Eastern High School, Cole
batted an even .500 in 16 conference games this spring as she collected 27 hits
in 54 trips to the plate. Her total of 27 hits is also a new MIAA
single-season record, surpassing the previous mark of 24 that was held by seven
different players. Of her 27 hits, eight were doubles, matching an MIAA
single-season record held by five other players.

In overall games, Cole currently holds a batting average of .425 that includes
34 runs scored, 12 runs scored, 11 doubles, 10 stolen bases, four triples and
two home runs. A shortstop, Cole also sports an impressive fielding percentage
of .959 as she has committed just five errors in over 120 fielding chances.

Cole has played a key role in helping Calvin gain the number-two seed for this
week's double-elimination MIAA Tournament, scheduled to be held at Alma
College Thursday and Friday. Calvin finished tied for second in the MIAA
regular season standings with Hope with a 13-3 conference mark, one game behind
first place Alma (14-2). Alma will be the tournament's number-one seed with
Hope the number-three seed and Olivet the number-four seed.

Calvin (23-11 overall) will face Hope (27-9) in the opening first round game
at 11:00 a.m. with Alma (25-8) slated to face Olivet (22-12) in the second
first round game at 1:00 p.m.
