CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 19, 2005
WOMEN'S TENNIS
With a win over defending conference champion St. Marys, the Calvin
women's tennis team upped its conference record to 3-1 and its over-all
record to 8-4. Calvin took the 8-1 win over St. Mary's on Tuesday
afternoon at home.
"We really competed well today. We knew it would be a difficult match
against a quality program, but several times we pushed back when we were
down and got back on top," said Coach Jerry Bergsma.
Calvin has a busy rest of the week, facing conference opponents Albion
(Wed.), Aquinas (Thurs. at home) and Olivet (Sat.). Coach Bergsma says
the team is "taking it a step at a time".
"Albion is the top team in the conference and is going to be a
challenge, but we usually thrive under that situation. I am
anticipating hard work like we saw today," said Coach Bergsma.

Calvin fell to Saginaw Valley State University 20-6 on Tuesday
afternoon. Calvin now has an overall record of 10-14 on the season.
The Knights were out of the game by the end of the second inning thanks
to an eleven run second frame by the Cardinals. Junior Ben
Buikema(Lake Odessa)was the starter and suffered the loss for Calvin,
falling to 0-2 on the season. Buikema lasted only one inning,
surrendering five earned runs. Freshman Todd LaForest (Clio) also
pitched in the second inning, giving up the other six runs; however,
none of the runs were earned.
The Knights put two on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when freshman
Alex Marcus (Willmar, MN) smacked a two-run homerun to left field,
scoring Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood). It was Marcus' first home run
of the season.
Calvin added on its final four runs of the game in the sixth.
Freshman Pieter Groot (Uxbridge, MA) was hit by a pitch with the bases
loaded, Hollemenas then walked to drive in another run. Sophomore Nick
Caudle (Calvin Christian) hit a single to drive in the third run and
then Groot scampered home on a wild pitch.
The Knights were held to only six hits on the day while SVSU used 17
during their offensive show, including three home runs.
One bright spot for Calvin was junior Kyle Snoeyink (Calvin Christian)
pitching two and a third scoreless innings in releif. It was only the
second game back for Snoeyink since a foot injury.
