MEN’S TENNIS
Ferris State, ranked 38th in the latest NCAA Division II rankings, defeated Calvin, 7-2, in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon. This defeat puts an end to
Calvin’s 13-win streak. Calvin’s last loss was February 29 to
nationally-ranked Aquinas. Calvin falls to 14-2 overall.
“I know we played a great team and competed really hard,” said head
coach John Ross. “This match was a lot closer than the score says.”
Calvin’s next match will be Wednesday at Calvin against Hope at 4:00.
“We needed some tougher competition to prepare us for Hope and
Kalamazoo,” said Ross. “We need to be tougher mentally to pull off
matches like this.”

JIM DETERS NAMED MIAA BASEBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
For the second time in three weeks and for the fifth time in his collegiate career, Calvin senior Jim Deters has been named the MIAA's Pitcher of the Week in baseball.
A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Deters struck out 20 batters in a game for the second time this season. He tied the league record for strikeouts in a game in a nine inning 11-2 victory over Olivet. He allowed four hits and walked none. In the victory, Deters carried a perfect game through seven inning while running his season record to 4-1 with the with and his MIAA record to 3-0.
Deters is currently tied for the league lead in pitching victories. He also leads the MIAA in earned run average (0.79), strikeouts (58) and innings pitched (34).
Calvin is currently 10-13 overall and in second place in the MIAA standings with an 8-4 conference mark. The Knights are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Division II Saginaw Valley State for a non-conference game slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
KARA VANKOOTEN NAMED MIAA SOFTBALL PITCHER OF THE WEEK
For the second time in her collegiate career, Calvin senior Kara VanKooten has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in softball.
A native of Anchorage, Alaska and a graduate of Grace Christian High School, VanKooten recorded four league victories last week as Calvin posted a 5-1 record in conference play.
In four appearances, VanKooten posted an earned run average of 1.48. In 24 innings she allowed 13 hits, walked five and struck out 13.
VanKooten is currently 4-0 in league play with an earned run average of 1.11. She is tied for second place in the MIAA standings in victories and is fifth in earned run average.
Calvin is currently 17-9 overall and 7-1 in conference play. The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they they travel to Tri-State University for a conference twinbill scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. (EST).
