CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 20, 2005

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams wrapped up MIAA dual meet crowns on Wednesday with dual meet victories over Albion and Adrian at Calvin Field.

In the men's competition, junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) sparkled once again, winning the discus, shot put and javelin throws. His winning throw in the discus of 177-11 was an NCAA III automatic qualifying mark while also breaking his own school record by one inch. Meckes also uncorked his second-best effort of the season in winning the shot put with a throw of 57-10 ½. His winning throw of 179-1 in the javelin was a season-best and just over nine feet away from an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark. Meckes was part of a powerful one-two punch in the discus as junior Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA) took second with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 160-7.

Junior Chris Friebel (Shelby, OH) also had a big day for Calvin. Slowed by injuries this spring, Friebel captured the 100 meters (10.98) and anchored Calvin's 400 meter relay team to a first place and season-best time of 42.58. He also took second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.30.

Sophomore Todd Schuster (Denver, CO) also enjoyed a big afternoon, winning the 800 meters with a career-best time of 1:54.25. Distance events were a strength for the Knights as senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) won the 1,500 meters (4:05.05), sophomore Tim Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) won the 5,000 meters (15:25.79) and sophomore Harrison Jorritsma (Beamsville, ON) won the 3,000 meter steeplechase (9:52.28).

Other winners for the Calvin men included freshman Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) in the 110 high hurdles (15.62), sophomore Eric DeVries (Unity Christian HS) in the pole vault (12-0) and junior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) in the triple jump (45-6 ¼). The marks by DeVries and Zwiers were both career-best performances.

On the women's side, senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) continued to shine as she ripped off the second-best throw of her career in the shot put in winning with a mark of 46-0. She is one of only three NCAA III women's shot put throwers to hit the 46-foot mark this spring. Another individual who came up with a career-best effort in a field event was sophomore Kelly Zwier (Kalamazoo Christian HS) who popped off a winning leap of 17-10 ¾ in the long jump with sophomore teammate Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS) close behind with a mark of 17-6.

In the high jump, junior Kim Vanderzee (Shoreline, WA) matched a career-best in winning the event with an NCAA III provisional qualifying mark of 5-7.

Freshman Sarah Wittingen (East Grapids HS) was also a double-winner, taking first in the 100 meter hurdles (15.10) and 400 meter hurdles (1:04.51) with her 400 meter hurdles time just missing an NCAA III provisional qualifying performance.

Other individual winners for Calvin included sophomore Lorilyn Vogel (Orange City, IA) in the triple jump (35-8), junior Missy Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the pole vault (10-6), freshman Jenny Zylstra (Lombard, IL) in the 5,000 meters (19:48), sophomore Lydia Singer (Wilmington, DE) in the 1,500 meters (5:03.20), junior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 800 meters (2:24.68), senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) in the 400 meters (57.44), sophomore Lisa Geelhoed (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 100 meters (13.23) and sophomore Kate VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the 200 meters (26.48).

The MIAA dual meet standings are worth one-half of the final league crown. The MIAA Field Day makes up the remaining half of the league title.

Both Calvin teams will now prepare to compete at the Eastern Michigan Invitational on Friday.
