CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 12, 2005 (PART TWO)
BASEBALL
Calvin dropped to 8-12 on the year with a 12-2 non-conference loss to Aquinas
Tuesday afternoon at Kimble Stadium. Aquinas (14-4) took control early,
scoring eight runs in the first inning off Calvin starter Justin Roza
(Hamilton, ON). A junior left-hander, Roza was tagged for eight runs in
two-thirds of a inning.
A bright spot for Calvin once again however was junior Ben Buikema
(Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) who came on in the first and proceeded to toss
shutout ball for the next three-and-a-third innings, allowing just two hits
while striking out three and walking none.
Freshman Todd LaForest (Clio) also pitched three shutot innings while freshman
Mike Stob (South Christian HS) pitched one inning and gave up four runs.
Calvin got on the scoreboard in the top of the third as sophomore Mark Asma
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) ripped a solo homer to left.
Aquinas came back with four runs in the bottom of the eighth with Calvin
picking up its final run of the game in the top of the ninth as freshman Alex
Marcus (Willmar, MN) delivered a one-out RBI single.
Roza (0-2) took the loss for Calvin while Drew Ottenwess (3-0) picked up the
win for Aquinas. Ottenwess struck out seven and walked none over seven inning
of work. Drew Oosterhouse threw the final two innings for the Saints.
Calvin returns to action on Friday when it hosts Olivet at 4:00 p.m. in the
opener of a three-game conference series at Calvin Field.
