CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 13, 2005
MEN'S TENNIS
(Written by Abby Zylstra, '08)
Calvin defeated visiting Albion, 5-4, in a conference dual match on Wednesday
afternoon to move up in the conference dual match standings. Calvin is now 3-0
in the league and 12-1 overall while Albion slipped to 3-1 in conference play.
Since a 7-2 loss to nationally-ranked Aquinas in mid-March, Calvin has ripped
off 13 straight dual match victories under the direction of head coach John
Ross.
"We were definitely looking forward to this match. We knew Albion would
be a good team and a good win if we could pull it off," said senior Kevin
VanHaitsma of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. "Albion's program has
definitely gone up and so has ours in the past few years. It's a good test for
both of us. "
"Albion beat us last year (5-4). They're one of the top teams in the
conference, and this is the only time we get to play them. It's a
fight for any of the top four in our conference," said Ross. "This was
a big win, a huge win, for us."
"It definitely feels good to win," said VanHaitsma. "We need to improve
a bit; we have a couple big matches next week. We need to keep the momentum
going."
Calvin's next match is scheduled for Saturday, April 16, at 1:00 p.m. at
Adrian.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
HOLLAND -- The Calvin men's and women's track and field teams opened their MIAA
dual meet campaigns on a victorious note as the men defeated Hope 115.5-76.5
and Tri-State 153.5-35.5 while the women defeated Hope 155.5-72.5 and Tri-State
147-17. With the pair of victories, the Calvin women's track and field team
stretched its MIAA dual meet win streak to 73 meets, dating all the way back to
the 1989 season.
Both teams turned in several sterling performances. On the women's side,
senior Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) led the way with victories in the 100 meters
(12.15) and 200 meters (24.38). Her time in the 100 meters was an NCAA III
provisional qualifying time and just eight-hundreths of a second off her school
record time of 12.08. Her time in the 200 meters was an NCAA III automatic
qualifying time and also matched her own school record time in the event set a
year ago. In addition, her 200 meter time is currently the fastest time in
NCAA III women's track and field this spring.
In the 100 meters, Abbring was part of a one-two Calvin finish as freshman
Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) churned out a season-best time of 12.84.
In the 200 meters, Calvin went 1-2-3 with senior Laura Hamilton (Downers
Grove, IL) taking second (25.98) and sophomore Lisa Winkle (South Christian HS)
taking third (26.13).
Winkle also led a 1-2-3 Calvi finish in the 400 meters as she took first place
in 59.17 followed by sophomore Katie Bolt (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in second
(1:00.31) and sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in third
(1:00.86).
In the 100 hurdles, Wittingen took second with a season-best and NCAA III
provisional qualifying time of 14.54. Hope freshman Lindsay Lange took first
with a provisional qualifying time of 14.54.
Calvin also had a strong day in the distance events as sophomore Lydia Singer
(Wilmington, DE) won the 3,000 meters (10:46.74) and 5,000 meters (18:40.67).
Singer led a 1-2 Calvin finish in the 3,000 meters as sophomore Laura Holtrop
(Derwood, MD) was second in 10:57.73.
Calvin junior Camille Medema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) also clocked a first
place time of 4:57.81 in the 1,500 meters. Both Calvin relays also turned in
first place efforts with its 400 meter relay team clocking in at 49.05 while
its 4x400 meter relay team took first in 4:04.05, nipping Hope's 4x400 meter
team by less than a second.
Calvin also flashed its strength in the field events as Bolt led a one-two
finish in the high jump, taking first in 5-2 while sophomore Lorilyn Vogel
(Orange City, IA) was second (5-0).
The pole vault featured a first place tie between a pair of returning
All-Americans as Hope sophomore Jennifer VanderMeer and Calvin junior Missy
Smith (Grand Rapids Christian HS) recorded NCAA III automatic qualifying marks
of 12-2 with Smith recording a season-best mark in the process. The marks by
Smith and VanderMeer match the best marks in NCAA III women's (outdoor) track
and field this spring.
In the jumps, Vogel captured the triple jump (34-7) while sophomore Kelly Zwier
(Kalamazoo Christian HS) took second with a season-best mark of 17-5.
In the throws, senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led a one-two
Calvi finish in the shot put with a winning toss of 44-7 1/2 while sophomore
Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) was second (43-8). VanderVliet then
unleashed a career-best and NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 142-9 to
win the discus. In the javelin, Calvin also went one-two with junior Christine
Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) winning with a throw of 120-7 while sophomore
Kristen Kalb (Stow, OH) was second (116-3 3/4).
On the men's side, Calvin junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) continued his
remarkable spring as he shattered his own school record in the shot put with an
NCAA III automatic qualifying throw of 58-5. The throw eclipsed his previous
record of 56-3 3/4 and is also the second-best mark in NCAA III track and field
this spring. Meckes then led a one-two Calvin finish in the discus as he took
first place (169-10) with junior Justin Grasmeyer (Norwalk, CA) second (149-5).
In addition, Meckes took second in the javelin (169-4), finishing just over
four inches behind Hope's Mike Groendyk.
Field events were a strength for the Calvin men as freshman Luke Allison
(Lakeville, MN) uncorked season-best efforts in winning the long jump (22-10)
and triple jump (45-0 1/2). Allison led a one-two Calvi finish in both events
as sophomore Josh Meckes (Bay City) was second in the long jump (22-9) and
junior Tim Zwiers (Pella, IA) second in the triple jump (43-3). Allison was
also second in the high jump (6-0).
Calvin also piled up the points in the distance events as sophomore Tim
Finnegan (Los Alamos, NM) led a 1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 5,000 meters with a
first place time of 15:26; senior Kris Koster (Grand Rapids Christian HS) led a
1-2-3 Calvin finish in the 3,000 meters with a first place time of 8:46.75 and
senior Jeff Engbers (Whitinsville, MA) captured the 1,500 meters with a first
place time of 3:56.80.
In the sprints, freshman Joel Baker (Kalamazoo Christian HS) led a one-two
Calvin finish with a time of 22.40 while junior Brian VanDyken (Grand Rapids
Christian HS) was second (22.65). The same duo went one-two in the 400 meters
with VanDyken winning in 51.41 and Baker taking second in 51.81.
In the hurdles, freshman Kelby McClelland (Mercer, PA) and senior Reuben
Sportel (South Christian HS) teamed up for a pair of one-two Calvin finishes
with McClelland winning the 110 high hurdles (15.33) with Sportel second
(15.80) and Sportel winning the 400 meter hurdles (56.99) with McClelland
second (58.64).
Both Calvin relays teams also ran to victories as its 400 meter relay team
nipped Hope by less than two-tenths of a second for a first place time of 43.76
while its 4x400 meter relay team won with a time of 3:29.96.
Both Calvin track and field teams return to action on Saturday when they host
MIAA dual meets against Alma and Olivet at noon.
MEN'S SOCCER
Over the years, the Calvin-Hope men's basketball rivalry has had a direct
correlation in the final NCAA III men's basketball attendance standings. Now
the rivalry has done the same in the final NCAA III men's soccer attendance
standings that were released this evening.
Calvin finished eighth in average attendance among men's soccer teams this fall
with an average of 355 fans a game. Wheaton (IL) led the nation with an
average of 693 fans a game. In addition, Calvin finished ninth in total
attendance with 4,268 fans in 12 home dates. The total attendance was
bolstered by an overflow throng of 2,000 fans that came out to see its regular
season finale against Hope at Calvin Field on November 6. The attendance that
day was the highest single-game attendance total of any NCAA III men's soccer
game this past fall with a game at Wheaton (IL) with Gordon College on
September 3 ranking second with 1,575 fans.
The game between Calvin and Hope on November 6 resulted in a 1-0 Calvin victory
as senior Joel VandeKopple scored the only goal of the game with just under
three minutes left to play. The victory gave Calvin its first outright MIAA
title since 1987 as the Knights finished three points ahead of the Flying
Dutchmen. It also gave the Knights their first NCAA III Tournament berth since
1991.
Led by head coach Chris Hughes, Calvin finished the 2004 season with an 18-2-1
overall record, finishing just one victory shy of a Calvin single-season record
for victories.
