CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR SATURDAY, APRIL 9, 2005
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

BIG RAPIDS - A powerful group of throwers continued to break records and grab
headlines for the Calvin men's and women's track and field teams on Saturday at
the Ferris State Invitational.

Calvin throwers eclipsed two school records and posted three NCAA III automatic
or provisional qualifying marks on Saturday. Leading the way for Calvin was
6-8 junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) who took first place in both the shot put and
discus competitions. In the shot put, Meckes won with a listed throw of 57-0.
His winning throw was actually believe to have traveled just a few inches shy
of 59 feet but due to a greater-than-allowable downward slope in the throwing
range beyond 50 feet at the Ferris shot put area, the throw was listed at 57-0.
Because of the downward slope, the throw will not count as an NCAA III
automatic qualifying mark. One throw by Meckes that will count as both an NCAA
III automatic qualifying and school record performance was his winning discus
throw of 177-10, breaking his previous school record of 177-2 set in 2003. The
discus throw by Meckes is currently the top throw in NCAA III men's outdoor
track and field.

On the women's side, Calvin senior Lisa Nanninga (Grand Rapids Christian HS)
produced a landmark day, taking second place in the shot put with an NCAA III
automatic qualifying and school record throw of 46-11 1/2. Her throw is
currently the second-best mark in NCAA III women's outdoor track and field this
spring and breaks the prevoius school record of 45-1 set by Katie Corner last
May at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Nanninga's winning
throw was also a personal-best by nearly two feet. Nanninga was joined by
sophomore Megann VanderVliet (Oakville, ON) in the shot put with VanderVliet
producing a fourth place mark of 44-1 1/2 that also qualified as a strong NCAA
III provisional qualifying mark. VanderVliet is bidding to make a trip to the
NCAA III Championships in the shot put for the second straight year.

Also producing NCAA III provisional qualifying performances for the Calvin
women on Saturday were seniors Sue Abbring (Highland, IN) and Laura Hamilton
(Downer's Grove, IL) with Abbring winning the 200 meters (25.18) while Hamilton
took second in the 400 hurdles (1:03.15).

Calvin's 4x100 meter relay team also clocked an NCAA III provisional qualifying
time of 48.86 in taking second place.

Junior heptathlete Christine Hendricks (Cincinnati, OH) also had a busy
afternoon, taking eighth in the long jump (16-1 1/2), second in the javelin
(120-11) and third in the high jump (5-0). Sophomore Katie VanderLaan (Grand
Rapids Christian HS) added a fourth place time of 59.69 in the 400 meters while
freshman Sarah Wittingen (East Grand Rapids HS) was sixth in the 200 meters
(26.36) and third in the 100 meter hurdles (15.39).

Both Calvin track and field teams will now prepare to open their MIAA dual meet
campaigns on Wednesday when they travel to Hope for double-dual meets that will
also include Tri-State University.

BASEBALL
(Story written by Colin McWhertor '07)

Grand Rapids- Calvin defeated Tri-State twice on Saturday to sweep the
season series against the Thunder. The Knights won game one in
comeback fashion, 6-5, with two runs in the final inning; then they
cruised to an 8-3 victory in game two.

Calvin is now 8-11 overall, but more importantly, 6-3 in the MIAA and in
third place, just a game behind co-league leaders Albion and Adrian which stand
at 7-2 in league play. The Knights are also two games ahead of Alma, Hope and
Olivet which are locked in a three-way tie for fourth place in the league
standings at 4-5 in conference play. Tri-State falls to 8-16 overall and 3-6 in
the MIAA.

In game one, Calvin fell behind 5-0 after three innings. A three-run
home run by Matt McElroy in the third off junior Tim Stoeffler(GR
Community College) gave the Thunder their five run lead.

Calvin began its comeback in the fourth inning. Junior Tyler Van
Eps(Denver, CO) doubled and scored on a single from senior Jim
Deters(Kalamazoo Christian). After Kyle Hollemans(East Kentwood) was
hit by a pitch, sophomore Nick Caudle(Calvin Christian) hit a grounder
to third that was thrown away by the third baseman, allowing Deters to
score. Juniors Mark Asma(Kalamazoo Christian) and Mark Tigchelaar(GR
Christian) were then hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, knocking in two
more runs for Calvin. Calvin would end the inning still trailing by a
score of 5-4.

In the seventh and final inning, Calvin would score two runs when senior
Josh Vriesman(Denver, CO) reached on an infield single and scored when
Van Eps' long fly ball was muffed by center fielder Mark Urbanski. Van
Eps wound up at third after the play and scored the game winning run
when junior Mike Aggen(Evergreen Park, IL) lined a single into left
center field.

The two unearned runs came off of reliever Nick Bragg, who suffered the
loss, falling to 0-3.

Stoeffler struggled with his command throughout the game, but was able
to make it through all seven innings to improve his record to 2-3 on
the season. Stoeffler gave up 10 hits and walked one batter, while
striking out six. In the second and sixth innings, Stoeffler struck
out a batter with the bases loaded to end two major threats for
Tri-State. Stoeffler's lack of command was evident when he hit four
Tri-State batters.

In game two, Calvin led from the outset, scoring three runs in the first
inning. Asma walked and stole second, then scored on a single to right
field by Aggen. Calvin would add to unearned runs when a fly ball by
deters was lost in the sun by the center fielder Urbanski, allowing Van
Eps and Aggen to score.

Tri-State got one run in the second inning when Garrett Klinedinst
doubled home Urbanski, who had led off with a double.

The Knights would put the game away when they scored five runs in the
fourth inning, chasing starting pitcher Bryan Reid (0-4). Sophomore
Brad Brummel(South Christian) singled in Deters, who had walked, and
Asma double to score Caudle, who had also walked. A fielders choice by
Vriesman scored Brummel and Van Eps singled home two runs in the form of
Vriesman and Asma.

Junior Jory Trim(Creston) worked six innings, surrendering three runs 11
hits and struck out five for Calvin. Trim improved to 3-2 on the season
and picked up his second victory this week, having defeated Kalamazoo on
Tuesday.

Junior Ben Buikema pitched a scoreless seventh to wrap up the game. It
was the only inning the Calvin bullpen had to work all series, with
starters pitching 24 out of 25 innings.

Calvin will be back in action on Tuesday at Aquinas at Kimball Stadium, and
again next
weekend for a three-game series against Olivet at Calvin Field.
