CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIl 8, 2005

BASEBALL

(Written by Colin McWhertor '07)

Grand Rapids- Josh Vriesman set the all-time hits record at Calvin with a
single in the first inning and Jim Deters pitched a one-hit shutout as Calvin
defeated Tri-State University on Friday afternoon. It was the first official
MIAA meeting between the two schools; Tri-State became a full member of the
league beginning this season. Calvin improved to 4-3 in the MIAA this season
and 6-11 overall. Tri-State fell to 3-4 in the MIAA, and 7-10 overall.

Vriesman moved past Joe Rinckey, who played at Calvin from 1983 until 1986,
into first place with his 141st hit as he smacked a shot in the bottom of the
first through the left side of the infield. A senior from Denver, Colorado,
Vriesman is a four-year starter at shortstop for Calvin. Coach Jim Timmer made
sure to collect the ball as a keepsake for Vriesman.

Deters, a senior, pitched magnificently, completing the game by facing only 28
batters, one short of the minimum. The Kalamazoo native struck out 11 and
issued only one walk to Matt Laucher, who was then thrown out attempting to
steal in the fifth. Two major league scouts were also in attendance, watching
Deters pitch.

Deters did not allow a hit until the sixth inning when catcher Jake Lemish
lined a pitch to right field with one out. Deters would retire the final 11
batters in order to gain the victory, moving him to 3-1 on the season. Deters
improved his career record at Calvin to 21-6 and 14-3 in the MIAA. His wins
are good for fourth place on the all-time victories list in the MIAA.

Calvin gave Deters plenty of offensive support, getting ahead in the first
inning on a sacrifice fly out from junior Mike Aggen(Evergreen Park, IL) that
scored junior Mark Tigchelaar(GR Christian), who had singled earlier.

The Knights would quickly add on in the second inning when junior Tim
Stoeffler(GR Community College) doubled to the left-center field gap, scoring
Nick Caudle(Calvin Christian), who had reached on an error. Junior Mark
Asma(Kalamazoo Christian) then knocked in Eric Boer(GR Christian) with a
groundout and Stoeffler scored on a sacrifice fly from Tigchelaar, making the
score 4-0 after two innings.

Calvin would add a run in the fourth after Asma singled, stole second, and
moved to third on a wild pitch. Tigchelaar then slapped a single through the
left side that scored Asma, making it 5-0.

In the sixth, Calvin would add two unearned runs when Tigchelaar would score
on an error while junior Tyler Van Eps(Denver, CO) singled and scored on junior
Kyle Hollemans'(East Kentwood) RBI single.

Kyle Stoops picked up the loss for Tri-State, falling to 2-1.

Calvin and Tri-State will continue their series tomorrow with a double-header
at the Calvin field; game time is 1pm. The game will be broadcast over
RealAudio through the Calvin web site at:
