CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 5, 2005

BASEBALL

Calvin pulled into a four-way tie for third place in the MIAA standings with a 12-0 victory over visiting Kalamazoo Tuesday afternoon in a game shortened to seven innings because of the mercy rule. Tuesday’s game was originally scheduled for March 28 but was postponed because of unplayable field conditions.

Calvin (5-10 overall, 3-3 MIAA) broke a scoreless tie with eight runs in the bottom of the third inning with junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) collecting a two-run RBI double, sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) following with an RBI double and sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) driving in Asma with an RBI double of his own.

Calvin would then tack on four runs in the fifth to provide all the run support junior pitcher Jory Trim (Grand Rapids Creston HS) would need as Trim collected the victory in six innings of work to run his season record to 2-2.

Calvin collected just seven hits on the afternoon but reaped the benefits of five walks issued by the Kalamazoo pitching staff. Calvin batters were also hit by a pitch on three occasions.

Stoeffler finished the game with two hits and four RBI’s while senior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) scored two runs and collected an RBI single.

Junior Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) also pitched a scoreless seventh inning to close out the win.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Grand Valley State for a 4:00 p.m. contest in Allendale. A year ago, Grand Valley took second at the NCAA II College World Series. The Lakers are currently ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II poll.

Wednesday’s game will be broadcast via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
