KALAMAZOO - The softball team traveled to Kalamazoo College for a
double-header this afternoon, playing its first MIAA Conference games of the
season. Calvin (12-4 overall, 2-0 MIAA) started off well in MIAA play, winning
both games 10-2
against Kalamazoo.
Sophomore Ruth Anna Spooner pitched for Calvin in the first game. She
struck out 12 K-zoo batters, while allowing five hits and two runs. Spooner
is now 4-0 on the year.
Calvin scored four runs in the first inning of the first game with 2 walks
and singles by Jeanne Cole, senior Abby Konyndyk and Bridget O'Malley.
Calvin again scored in the second, with a single by freshman Cori
VanKoevering (Unity), a walk, and another single by Konyndyk, which brought
in the two runs of the inning. One run in Calvin's third, brought on by
Andrea Wagner and VanKoevering singles, gave Calvin the 7-0 lead.
Kalamazoo made a move to close the gap in their third, scoring two runs on
two errors by the Calvin fielders, a double, and two singles.
Both teams were silent until Calvin's 6th inning, when the team scored
three runs off of six hits: a single by Cole, a homerun by Konyndyk, and
singles by freshman Jalean Makedonsky, Chandra Fynaardt, Leah Bareman, and
Danielle Roskamp.
The home run by Konyndyk was her fifth of the year - matching the Calvin
single-season record established by current teammate Laurel Sands during the
2002 season.
Kalamazoo got one hit in the 6th, but failed to score. The game was
called after the 6th inning, giving Calvin the 10-2 win.

walked, Laurel Sands singled, and VanKoevering scored on a K-zoo error.

The Knights scored in the top of the second inning. Junior Tyler Van

centerfield. Junior Kyle Hollemans [Kentwood/East Kentwood] hit to
second base and was thrown out at first, but advanced Van Eps to third
base. Sophomore Eric Boer [Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian]

Grand Valley tied the game up in the bottom of the second. Junior Nick
Sandy was hit by the pitch and then stole second. Sophomore Lee Van
Streaim hit to third base and was thrown out at first, but advanced
Sandy to third base. Freshman Pat Radde hit a single to allow Sandy to
score the Lakers' first run of the game.
The Knights didn't score in the third, and Grand Valley capitalized on
this opportunity. Senior Ryan Lyster hit a single to get on base, but
wouldn't stay there long. The next batter, senior Brandon McFarland
hit a two run homer. The third batter of the inning, Nick Smith, hit a
line drive home run as well, to put the Lakers up, 4-1. But they
wouldn't stop there. Sandy singled, stole second, and went home off a
single from VanStreaim. The Lakers closed the inning, up 5-1.
The Knights retired without scoring in the fourth inning. The Lakers
scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. McFarland scored off
a shallow centerfield hit by Van Streaim. Radde got his second RBI of
the game when Nick Smith scored. The Lakers led 7-1 at the bottom of
the fourth inning.
The Lakers scored again in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Smith
grounded out to second. Senior Scott Allen singled, but advanced to
second off a Calvin error. Sandy also grounded out to second. Van
Streaim took first base after being hit with a pitch. Radde singled up
the middle to score Allen. Wippich hit a single and scored Van Streaim.
Grand Valley led 9-1 at the bottom of the sixth.
Grand Valley scored another three runs in the bottom of the seventh
inning. Junior Chad Rohacs hit a double to the left fence.
Sophomore Grant Abraham hit the ball, got on base with a fielder's
choice, and Rohacs scored. Sandy hit his second home run of the game and
another
two runs scored. The Lakers retired, winning the game 12-1.
