For the fourth time in his career, Calvin College senior Jim Deters has been
named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball. A native of Portage and a graduate
of Kalamazoo Christian High School, the 6-4 right-hander achieved a pair of
MIAA milestones last week as he shattered the MIAA single-game record for
strikeouts while also becoming the MIAA's career strikeout leader.

In a 6-3 loss in 11 innings at Kalamazoo last Tuesday, Deters went the first
10 innings and struck out 20 batters, breaking the previous MIAA single record
of 17 established by Al Goetz of Alma in 1983. The strikeout total also matched
the sixth-best single-game strikeout total in NCAA III baseball history. Deters
allowed three runs and seven hits in the game with only one of the runs earned.
He was not credited with the pitching decision in the Calvin defeat.

On Saturday, Deters came back to toss six innings and gain the pitching
victory in a 6-2 win at Hope. Deters struck out seven Hope batters, bringing
his MIAA career total (conference games only) to 151 strikeouts, breaking the
previous MIAA record of 150 strikeouts set by Chris Gumper of Olivet from
1993-to-1996. Gumper established his strikeout record in 173 innings. Deters
reached the 151 strikeout level in just 125 innings.

On the week, Deters was 1-0 with an 0.56 ERA in 16 innings of work, striking
out 27 batters, scattering 11 hits and walking seven batters.

Calvin is currently 4-10 overall and 2-3 in the MIAA. The Knights are
scheduled to host Kalamazoo on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. in a single nine-inning
game that was originally scheduled for May 28.
