CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 2, 2005
BASEBALL
(Written by Colin McWhertor '07)
HOLLAND- Senior Jim Deters set another MIAA strikeout record, his second in as many starts. The senior right hander from Kalamazoo set the career record for strikeouts in the MIAA at 151 with seven strikeouts in Calvin's 6-2 victory over rival Hope in the first game of a double header Saturday.
Deters passed Chris Gumper of Olivet, who set the record at 150 strikeouts during his career from the '92 through '96. Deters recorded the milestone strikeout by striking out third baseman Colin Fry swinging to end his sixth and final inning of work.
Coming of a record setting performance of 20 strikeouts in a single game on Tuesday against Kalamazoo, Deters did not have the electric stuff that he had against the Hornets. Coach Jim Timmer knew his ace wasn't at his finest. "Jim only had three days to rest and he pitched ten innings on Tuesday, so he had to battle to be consistent, but he really stepped up and pitched well even without his best stuff."
Despite giving up five walks, Deters did not surrender an earned run, allowing only one unearned run in the first inning. He allowed four hits and walked five batters and improved his record to 2-1.
The 1-0 Hope lead lasted until the fifth inning when junior Tim Stoeffler(GR Community College) had a one out infield single. He would score as the next batter, junior Mark Asma(Kalamazoo Christian) doubled to the right centerfield gap which scored the speedy Stoeffler from first base. A line drive single to right by junior Mark Tigchelaar(GR Christian) scored Asma easily from second base to allow Calvin to take a 2-1 lead.
The Knights would add on in the sixth when Kyle Hollemans(East Kentwood), who had reached on a error, scored on a two-out single by junior Kyle Snoeyink(Calvin Christian). Snoeyink was the replaced on the bases due to a foot injury that he aggravated earlier in the game.
In the seventh, Calvin would blow the game open with three runs. Amsa, who was 3 for 4 on the day, led off with his second double and later scored on a fielder's choice by senior Josh Vriesman(Denver, CO). Junior Tyler Van Eps(Denver, CO) would then drive a double to the fence to knock in Tigchelaar, who had reached on an error, and Vriesman scored as the ball was thrown past second base as Van Epps slid in safely.
Van Eps went 2 for 4 and junior Mike Aggen(Evergreen Park, IL) also had a hit to account for the rest of Calvin's 11 hits.
Hope would score again in the seventh off Stoeffler, who came in to pitch after serving as the designated hitter for the game.
Andrew Vlasak took the loss for the Flying Dutchmen, falling to 2-3 on the year.
In the second game of the twin bill, it was Hope getting revenge and winning by a score of 7-3 to split the double-header and claim the season series from the Knights.
Stoeffler continued to pitch due to the injury to Snoeyink, who was scheduled to go in game number two. "We had to use Tim again, and that meant he wasn't going to have the endurance he would for a normal start," said Timmer on replacing Snoeyink. Stoeffler pitched four innings, giving up six runs, five earned, on five hits. He struck out one batter and did not allow a walk. Stoffler falls to 1-3 on the season with the loss.
Calvin scored first in the second game, taking advantage of an error. After Asma reached on the shortstop VanderVelde's error and scored on a sacrifice fly by Vriesman.
Hope would take the lead in the bottom of the first with two runs and add another run in the third. The Knights closed the gap to 3-2 in the top of the third when Van Eps smacked a double, scoring Tigchelaar, who had reached on an error.
The Dutchmen would pull away with two runs in the third and cement the win with two more runs in the fifth.
Van Eps provided Calvin's last run by blasting a solo home run to center field that finished Hope starter Mike Rodgers, who picked up the win to improve to 3-1. The home run for Van Eps was his first of the season.
Junior Ben Buikema(Lakewood) pitched one and two-thirds hitless innings to finish the game for Calvin.
Van Eps went 3 for 4 in the game, capping a 5 for 8 day at the plate. Aggen collected two hits while Deters, the designated hitter, and Vriesman also picked up hits for the Knights.
Calvin is scheduled to travel to Sienna Heights on Tuesday for a 4:00 non-conference game. Calvin may also use the date to play a make-up game against Kalamazoo, details will be announced later if there is a schedule change.

In a double-header against non-conference opponent University of Wisconsin-Stout, Calvin fell 5-2 in the first game, but came back for a 2-0 victory in the second.
In the first game, UW-Stout scored one run in each of the first three innings against Calvin pitcher senior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK/Grace Christian School), while Calvin remained scoreless until the bottom of the 4th.
Calvin's first hit of the game was by short stop junior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern), who singled to left field. She then would score, pushed in by two walks and an error by UW-Stout pitcher freshman Ande Schrader.
UW-Stout would come back in their 5th to gain two runs, coming by the way of, one walk, an error, a stolen bask by junior Courtney Zafft, and then one hit by designated player freshman Maureen Smith that drove in an RBI.
However, Calvin was not silent in their 5th, scoring a run and connecting on 3 hits. Pinch hitter freshman Samantha Ehlert (Rockford) singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, then scored off of a single by sophomore Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian). Junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian) also had a hit, but a running error closed out the inning.
Calvin would have a chance for the comeback in the 6th, helped by a double from the bat of senior Lea Bareman with one on base. However, another Calvin running error accounted for the third out, cutting the Knight's rally short.
Both teams would have three-up-three-down in the 7th, giving UW-Stout the win and a 5-9 season record, while Calvin would now be 9-4. Winning pitcher: Schrader 4-3. Losing pitcher: Van Kooten 4-3. UW-Stout finished with 7 hits, Calvin with 5.
In game two, sophomore pitcher Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) struck out 5, walked none, allowed only 4 hits and 0 runs.
Calvin scored one run in both the 2nd and 4th innings. In the 2nd, senior Bridget O'Malley (Farifax, VA) was walked, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wagner, advance to third on a single by sophomore Erin Conrad (Calvin Christian), and reached home on a UW-Stout error.
Calvin had two doubles in the 4th, one by junior Laurel Sands (Rockford) and one by O'Malley, which drove in Sands.
UW-Stout threatened with 2 hits in their 6th but did so with two outs already on the bored. Freshman first-baseman Cori Van Koevering (Unity Christian) caught the fly foul to end the inning.
Konyndyk began Calvin's 6th with a single, but Calvin would not be able to get a run. Spooner struck out the first batter in UW-Stout's 7th, and the infielders assisted the three-up-three-down, catching a popped fly and getting the last batter out at first.
Calvin captured the win, pushing their record to 10-4, and UW-Stout finishing with a 5-10. Winning pitcher: Spooner 4-0. Losing pitcher: Megan Donley 1-7.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Battling cold, windy conditions, the Calvin men's and women's track and field teams still managed to put together several strong efforts at the (unscored) Grand Rapids Open Saturday afternoon.
Field events were a strength for both teams as they combined for five NCAA III provisional qualifying marks. Junior Nate Meckes (Bay City) led the Calvin men with NCAA III provisional qualifying and first place marks in the shot put and discus. Meckes captured the shot put with a heave of 53-10 ¼ and the discus with a throw of 170-2.
