SOFTBALL
(Story written by Abby Zylstra '08)
On April Fool's Day, there was no joking around for the Calvin softball team as it won both of its games in the Triangular Tourney hosted by Calvin.
Calvin defeated its first opponent, Case Western Reserve, 2-0. Calvin
scored one run in the second inning. Junior Laurel Sands (Rockford HS) scored for the Knights on a single from senior Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS). Calvin's only other run came in the sixth inning. Freshman Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) crossed
the home plate off a base hit from junior Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS). The Knights finished that game with two runs, six hits, and two errors. Case Western Reserve had no runs, five hits, and no errors.
Senior Kara Van Kooten (Anchorage, AK) took the win for the Knights, improving to 4-2. She pitched all seven innings and allowed five hits, one walk, and struck out four.
Cole went two for three in the game and drove in one run and Andrea
Wagner and Heyboer both went one for one.
In Calvin's second game, the Knights defeated UW-River Falls, 6-3. UW-River Falls took a fast lead in the top of the first inning to score three runs off of five hits while Calvin committed one error.
Calvin bounced back in the bottom of the third to tie up the game. Junior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) hit her fourth home run of the season to bring in Cole and sophomore Andrea Wagner (Unity Christian HS).
Calvin broke the tie in the bottom of the fifth inning. VanKoevering got the ball rolling as she smashed a double to left center. Cole then walked and advanced to second on a passed ball and Van Koevering advanced to third. Konyndyk walked to load the bases. A single from Sands drove in two runs to put the Knights up, 5-3.
Senior Bridget O'Malley (Fairfax, VA) singled to left field, and coach Deb Bakker aggressively sent the pinch runner, sophomore Chandra
Fynaardt (Pella, IA), from second to home to score the sixth run. The Knights finished the game with six runs, eight hits, and one error. UW-River Falls finished with three runs, nine hits, and no errors.
Sophomore Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID) took the win for the Knights, improving to 3-0 on the season. In five innings, she allowed three hits, three walks, and struck three out.
VanKoevering was a perfect two for two in the second game, while
Konyndyk went a perfect one for one and drove in three runs.
Calvin advances to 9-3 on the season while UW-River Falls goes to 6-8
and Case Western Reserve falls to 3-12.
Calvin plays again tomorrow afternoon against UW-Stout at 1:00 at the
Gainey Field. The contest will not be a doubleheader but will instead be a single game.
BASEBALL
HOLLAND * The opener of a three-game conference series between rivals Calvin and Hope went to Hope as the Flying Dutchmen claimed a 3-2 victory.

Hope would score again in the third as Matt VanBeek homered to left field.
Calvin (3-9 overall, 1-2 MIAA) would bounce back with a run in the top of the fifth as junior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) reached base on an infield error, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) and scored on a two-out RBI single to left by sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS).
Hope would score the eventual game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth when VanBeek doubled to right and scored on an RBI single by Vance Nardin.
Calvin would creep to within a run in the eighth as Tigchelaar led off with a walk and moved to second and then to third on passed balls. Tigchelaar then scored on a sacrifice fly to center by senior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS).
In the ninth, Calvin was retired in order as Hope junior Mike Howes picked up his fourth save of the year.
