BASEBALL

Calvin was unable to overcome an early uprising by Spring Arbor Wednesday afternoon at Calvin Field as the Knights fell to the visiting Cougars 16-7. Spring Arbor scored 10 runs in the first three innings including four in the second and four in the third to build a commanding 10-0 lead.

Calvin would peck away at the lead late, scoring four fifth, one in the eighth and two in the ninth. The Knights (3-8) received home runs from junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) and Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) in the eighth and ninth innings respectively. The home run by Aggen was his second of the year while Stoeffler ripped his first roundtripper of the spring.

Junior Justin Roza (Burlington, ON) took the loss for Calvin in defeat to fall to 0-1 on the year. Spring Arbor collected 14 hits on the afternoon including four from infielder Zach DeFrain.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it travels to Hope for a 3:00 p.m. contest to open a three-game conference series.

SOFTBALL

Late-inning heroics were the theme in a non-conference doubleheader between cross-town rivals Calvin and Aquinas Wednesday afternoon at the Aquinas softball field.

In the opener, Calvin (7-3) scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to claim a 5-3 victory. Aquinas (12-2) turned the tables in game two, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 2-1 victory.

In game one, Calvin took an early lead with a two-run homer by senior Abby Konyndyk (Grand Rapids Christian HS) in the top of the first with Aquinas coming back with a run in the bottom half. Konyndyk would also deliver Calvin's third run with an RBI single in the top of the third.
Aquinas fought back with a run in the fourth and forced extra innings with a run in the bottom of the seventh but failed to cash in on an opportunity to win when the Saints had runners on second and third with only one out. Calvin senior pitcher Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) was able to bear down and get out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout.

In the top of the eighth, junior shortstop Jeanne Cole (Mason County Eastern HS) was placed on second to start the inning and came around to score on an Aquinas error. Calvin would add an insurance run as Konyndyk scored on a muffed throw by the Aquinas catcher. VanKooten (3-1) was then able to pitch a scoreless eighth to gain the win in relief of senior starter Rachelle Heyboer (Fremont HS). Heyboer scattered six hits in six innings of work while walking three and striking out two.

In game two, Konyndyk belted her third home run of the spring as she ripped a solo shot over the right-centerfield wall in the top of the third.

Calvin would keep Aquinas off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh when the Saints capitalized on two walks, two hits and one error to plate two runs and win the game.

VanKooten took the loss as she came on in the seventh in relief of sophomore starter Ruth Anna Spooner (Twin Falls, ID). Spooner scattered three hits in six innings of work, striking out six and walking two.

Konyndyk was 4-for-4 on the afternoon with four RBI's and three runs scored. In game one, freshman Cori VanKoevering (Unity Christian HS) and Cole collected two hits apiece with Cole scoring two runs. In game two, sophomore Andrew Wagner (Unity Christian HS) collected two of Calvin's six hits.

Calvin returns to action on Friday when it plays hosts to a triangular. Calvin will host Case Western Reserve at 12:30 p.m. with Case Western Reserve then facing UW-River Falls at 2:30 p.m. and Calvin meeting UW-River Falls at 4:30 p.m.

Both of Calvin's games will be aired via RealAudio through the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
