DETERS BREAKS 22-YEAR OLD MIAA PITCHING RECORD IN DEFEAT

KALAMAZOO - Calvin senior Jim Deters shattered a 22-year old MIAA pitching
record but his record-setting performance was bittersweet as Calvin dropped a
6-3 decision in 11 innings at Kalamazoo College Tuesdayafternoon in the MIAA
opener for both teams.

Calvin (3-7 overall, 1-1 MIAA) came back to win the nightcap 13-1 to gain a
doubleheader split.

Tuesday's twinbill was originally scheduled to be played at Calvin but was
moved to Kalamazoo because of wet playing conditions at Calvin. Despite the
road trip, Calvin was the home team for both games on Tuesday.

In the opener, Deters struck out 20 Kalamazoo Hornets, breaking the previous
MIAA single-game strikeout record of 17 established by Al Goetz of Alma in
1983. Deters went the first 10 innings of Tuesday's opener, striking out
nine of the first 12 batters he faced. Deters would scatter seven hits over
his 10 innings of work, allowing three runs - only one of which was earned.

With his 20 strikeouts, Deters boosted his MIAA career total to 144, only six
away from the MIAA record of 150 set by Chris Gumper of Olivet between
1993-to-1996. A native of Portage and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High
School, Deters was pitching less than two miles away from his high school alma
mater Tuesday afternoon.

The strikeout total by Deters is the sixth-highest single-game total in NCAA
III baseball history. The record is 22 strikeouts which is shared by
Lakeland's Chris Plucinski, Scott Alexander of Salve Regina and David
Baumann of Western New England.

The previous single-game strikeout total for Deters had been 15 strikeouts in
a 2-1 win at Olivet on April 1, 2002.

Junior Kyle Snoeyink (0-1) would pitch the final inning for Calvin and would
suffer the loss as he gave up a three-run homer with two outs in the top of the
11th with all three runs unearned.

In fact, five of Kalamazoo's six runs in the victory were unearned. Calvin
outhit Kalamazoo (6-4 overall, 1-1 MIAA) 13-9 in the loss but stranded 12
runners.

Calvin held a 5-0 lead through five innings but the Hornets would strike back
with two runs in the top of the sixth, using two hits, an error and a sacrifice
bunt to take a 2-1 lead. Kalamazoo starting pitcher Charlie Mackinnon (3-0)
helped his own cause with a two-out two-run RBI single with the bases loaded.
Calvin came back to tie the game with a run in the bottom half of the inning as
Snoeyink reached base on an error and moved to second on an overthrow of first
base. Snoeyink then moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a
sacrifice fly by sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS). Neither
team would score in the seventh but in the eighth, Kalamazoo would score on an
infield single by Mackinnon which plated Jeff Leone who led off the inning with
a double and then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. Calvin would keep the
game alive with a run in the bottom half of the inning as pinch-runner Bobby
Fisher (Walkerville) scored from second base on a Kalamazoo error with one out.

Calvin would waste a golden opportunity to win the game in the bottom of the
ninth as sophomore Mark Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) led off with a double to
centerfield but was stranded as Mackinnon bore down to get out the jam with a
pair of fly outs and a strikeout.

In the top of the 11th, Kalamazoo would place two runners on base, using a
single and a Calvin error. With two outs, Kalamazoo's Scott Turnbull belted
a line-drive shot over the left-field wall for a three-run homer to give the
Hornets a 6-3 lead that the Knights would not overcome.

In game two, Calvin rapped out 10 hits and reaped the benefits of nine walks
off of four Kalamazoo pitchers. Junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) picked up
the complete-game victory, scattering five hits over seven innings, striking
out eight batters and walking one.

Snoeyink belted a pair of home runs in the game two victory with Tigchelaar
also ripping a homer.

Calvin senior shortstop Josh Vriesman also picked up five hits on the
afternoon, going 3-for-6 in game one and 2-for-3 in game two. Sophomore
rightfield Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) also collected three hits for
Calvin in game one while junior catcher Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) and
Tigchelaar had three hits on the afternoon.

Vriesman and Snoeyink were both making their season debuts on Tuesday as both
players were members of Calvin's men's basketball team that reached the
NCAA III Final Four a week-and-a-half ago which took place during the Calvin
baseball team's spring trip to Fort Myers, Florida.

Calvin returns to action on Wednesday when it hosts Spring Arbor University in
a non-conference game at 3:00 p.m. The game will be broadcast via RealAudio
through the Calvin web site at: www.Calvin.edu/sports
