Calvin Fifth in Latest NACDA Director's Cup Standings
GRAND RAPIDS -- A spectacular winter sports season has vaulted Calvin College
into the top 10 of the NACDA Director's Cup Division III standings sponsored by
the United States Sports Academy .
After the recently completed winter sports season, Calvin is in fifth place in
the NCAA Division III standings with 456 points, 12.5 points ahead of sixth
place College of New Jersey and 43 points behind fourth place Middlebury (VT).
Defending champion Williams College (MA) again leads the standings with 739.75
points with UW-Stevens Point in second with 646.75 points and UW-LaCrosse third
with 524.5 points.
Sponsored by the United States Sports Academy , the Director's Cup
competition is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as for NAIA
schools.
The standings are based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA and
NAIA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association
of Collegiate Director's of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate
athletics program in the country.
The recently completed winter season includes the sports of men's and women's
basketball, men's and women's ice hockey, men's and women's swimming, men's and
women's indoor track and field, men's wrestling, skiing and fencing. Schools
that advance to the national meet in both indoor and outdoor track and field
must take the highest team finish of the two seasons but can not count both.
Calvin moved into fifth place on the strength of three top-10 national
finishes by its winter sports teams as its men's basketball team finished third
(83 points), its women's basketball team reached the Elite Eight of its
national tournament for a fifth place finish (73) while its women's swimming
and diving team tied for 10 th (67.5 points). In fact, all four of Calvin's
winter sports teams scored points in the Director's Cup chase as its men's
swimming and diving team tied for 41 st at the NCAA III Championships which was
good for 32.5 Director's Cup points.
Calvin's recently completed winter sports season marked the first time Calvin
had placed three teams in the top 10 nationally in the same sports season
(fall, winter, spring).
After the fall sports season Calvin was ninth with a total of 200 points.
Calvin was able to build its point total on the performance of its men's cross
country team, its women's volleyball team and men's soccer team at the NCAA III
Championships this past November as the men's cross country team captured its
second consecutive national championship to earn 100 Director's Cup points
while the women's volleyball and men's soccer teams reached the second round of
their respective NCAA III Tournaments to earn 50 points apiece.
Combined, seven of Calvin's 11 sports teams that have completed their seasons
during the 2004-05 academic year have scored Director's Cup points.
Calvin's best-ever national finish in the final Director's Cup standings is
sixth place which came during the 1999-00 academic year when it posted a total
of 561 points.
Since the Director's Cup was initiated at the NCAA Division III level for the
1995-96 academic year, Calvin is one of only nine schools to finish in the
top-25 all nine previous years. Joining Calvin in the group are Williams,
College of New Jersey , Amherst (MA), Middlebury (VT), Ithaca (NY),
Wisconsin-LaCrosse, SUNY-Cortland and Emory ( Ga. ).
Calvin has posted three top-10 national finishes as it also took seventh (350
points) during the 1998-99 season and ninth (474 points) during the 2000-01
season to go with sixth place finish during the 1999-00 campaign.
Last year, Calvin finished 23rd in the final Director's Cup standings with
382.5 points to finish in the top 25 for the ninth consecutive year.
Calvin is currently one of three schools from the state of Michigan ranked in
the top 10 of their respective Director's Cup standings as the University of
Michigan leads the NCAA Division I standings with 615.75 points while Grand
Valley State University leads the NCAA Division II standings with 532.5 points.
