CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 16, 2005
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
STERLING, Va. -- D3hoops.com has announced the fourth annual D3hoops.com
All-Region team for Division III women's basketball.
Players were nominated for these awards by the Sports Information Directors at
the various schools, who were contacted several times as the season wound down
to remind them to make their players eligible. A record 606 players were
nominated nationwide.
The ballot was then made available to SIDs, who voted for 10 players in their
region. SIDs voted for six frontcourt players and four backcourt players and
the top vote-getters at each position were named to the All-Region team.
"We are thankful to the Sports Information Directors across Division III who
took the time to nominate and vote to provide broader recognition to these
worthy student-athletes," said D3hoops.com publisher Pat Coleman.
"Participation continues to grow each year and that only strengthens the
team."
Two members of the Calvin women's basketball team have been so honored as
senior Kristen McDonald and sophomore Lisa Winkle have both been named to the
Great Lakes All-Region second team by D3hoops.com.
McDonald is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of West Catholic High School.
A point guard, McDonald averaged 14.7 points and 6.2 assists per game which
ranked her among the nation's leaders in assist-per-game average. In four
NCAA III Tournament games, McDonald averaged 16.8 points and 5.9 assists per
game. She finished her career with 1,170 points which ranks her sixth in the
Calvin career scoring list. She also finished as Calvin's career leader in
assists (381) and three-point field goals (187) while also establishing a new
single-season record for assists with 185.
In addition, McDonald established new MIAA Tournament records for points (40)
and assists (11) during Calvin's run to the MIAA Tournament championship
three weeks ago.
McDonald is receiving Great Lakes All-Region honors from D3hoops.com for the
first time in her career.
Winkle is also from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of South Christian High
School. She is receiving D3hoops.com all-region honors for the second straight
year as she was named to the Great Lakes All-Region third team a year ago.
A 6-0 forward, Winkle averaged 16.1 points and 8.5 rebounds a game this year
for the Knights while blocking 72 shots and collecting 41 assists. Winkle
finished the season with 484 points while connecting on 59.9 percent of her
field goal attempts - both Calvin single-season records.
During the season, she notched double-digits in scoring in 27 of a possible 32
games and posted nine double-double efforts. In a 72-63 second round NCAA III
Tournament victory at DePauw March 5, Winkle nearly collected a triple-double
as she recorded 22 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high eight blocked shots.

Calvin also established a new single-season record for victories, breaking the
previous record of 24 set by its 1998-99 team that went 24-6.
