CALVIN SPORTS REPORT (PART TWO) FOR MARCH 16, 2005

BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL * After three days of competition, the Calvin baseball has a 2-3 record in grapefruit play.

On Tuesday, Calvin split a pair of games, edging Wilmington of Ohio 5-4 and then falling to UMass-Boston 22-6. On Wednesday, Calvin suffered a 12-2 defeat to Clark College.

CALVIN 5, WILMINGTON 4

In the victory over Wilmington, Calvin received a complete-game pitching effort from junior Jory Trim (Creston HS) as he scattered 12 hits over seven innings of work to gain the win. Wilmington outhit Calvin 12-7 but the Knights were able to come up with three runs in the third and two in the fifth to hold off the Quakers.

Junior Kyle Holleman (East Kentwood HS) and senior Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up two hits apiece in the victory while sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) also ripped a two-run RBI double.

Deters also picked up a pair of RBI's while junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph) had one. Calvin also reaped the benefits of six walks given up by the Wilmington pitching staff.

UMASS-BOSTON 22, CALVIN 6

The bats of UMass-Boston thundered out 21 hits and plated 12 runners in the first three innings as Calvin went down to defeat by a double-digit margin. Calvin did collect eight hits with Deters and sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Christian HS) rapping out two hits apiece with Tigchelaar collecting a triple. Sophomore Brad Brummel (South Christian HS) also ripped a bases-loaded triple in the top of the sixth when the Knights mounted a brief rally.

Junior Ben Buikema (Lakewood-Lake Odessa HS) took the loss to fall to 0-1 on the year.

CLARK 12, CALVIN 2

Calvin suffered a double-digit defeat to Clark College Wednesday afternoon in a game that was still in doubt until the late innings.

Calvin took a 2-1 lead with a run in the top of the fourth but Clark answered with a run in the bottom half to tie the game at two. Clark then broke the game open with six runs in the bottom of the sixth and added five insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull away for the win.

Junior Justin Roza (Burlington, ON) went the first five innings for the Knights, striking out four and walking seven. Freshman Todd LaForest (Clio) went the final three innings and took the loss as he allowed five hits and nine runs to score.

Calvin picked up eight hits with junior catcher Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL) and sophomore outfield Mike Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) collecting two hits apiece.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships are scheduled to open Thursday morning at the Holland Aquatic Center with Hope College serving as host.

Calvin's lone representative at the national meet will be senior Peter Boumgarden of Naperville, Illinois. Boumgarden will not compete until Friday when he will swim in both the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke. Boumgarden is a three-time all-american in the 100 butterfly and is seeded third in the event heading into the weekend.

Boumgarden will also compete in the 100 freestyle on Saturday.
