CALVIN SPORTS REPORT FOR MARCH 14, 2005

NCAA III FINAL FOUR TICKETS ON SALE AT CALVIN BOX OFFICE

The Calvin men's basketball team (26-6) will open play in the NCAA III Final Four on Friday when it takes on Rochester University of New York (24-4) at 6:00 p.m. at the Salem Civic Center. Friday's second semifinal game will pit defending national champion Wisconsin Stevens-Point (27-3) up against York College of Pennsylvania (27-2) at 8:00 pm. Friday's winners will meet in the national championship game on Saturday at 5:00 pm while the losers will play in the consolation game on Friday at 2:30 pm.

NCAA III Final Four tickets are sold as a package deal only. They are reserved seats and cost $20 for all adults and $10 for students college age and under. Children under 2 are free and do not need a ticket. This price includes entrance to all four games of the tournament.

Tickets will go on sale Tuesday morning at the Calvin Box Office as follows:

Boosters and Season Ticket Holders at 10:30am
Faculty, Staff and Students at 12:30pm
General Public at 2:30pm.

Tickets will remain on sale until sometime Wednesday afternoon. More details to follow. If you are not able to come to the box office to purchase tickets we will be accepting credit card phone orders as well by calling 616-526-6282.

BASEBALL

FORT MYERS, FL * Calvin opened its 2005 campaign with a split of games at the Cape Coral Complex as the Knights out slugged Sewanee State 17-11 and then fell to Transylvania University 10-5.

In the victory over Sewanee State, Calvin erupted for 17 hits including three home runs. Going deep for Calvin were junior catcher Mike Aggen (Evergreen Park, IL), sophomore first baseman Eric Boer (Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Tim Stoeffler (St. Joseph). Stoeffler's blast was a grand slam as he finished the game with five RBI's. Aggen also collected four hits and four RBIs while sophomore Nick Caudle (Calvin Christian HS) had two hits, three runs scored and three RBIs. Caudle picked up a double as did sophomore Mark Tigchelaar (Grand Rapids Chrsitian HS).

Senior right hander Jim Deters (Kalamazoo Christian HS) went six innings and picked up the win for the Knights as he struck out six and walked two. Junior Joel Bont (Calvin Christian HS) came on in the final three innings and allowed just one run and two hits.

In the loss to Transylvania, Calvin took a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and would take a 5-3 lead into the fourth. Transylvania would pick up three runs in the fourth and four in the sixth however to take control of the game as it finished the game with 18 hits. Stoeffler (0-1) took the loss to Calvin as he struck out two and walked two. Freshman Todd LaForest (Clio) also threw two innings of relief. Junior Kyle Hollemans (East Kentwood HS) picked up two of Calvin's seven hits in defeat while sophomore Mike Asma (Kalamazoo Christian HS) also collected a double.

Calvin returns to action on Tuesday for games against Wilmington College and UMASS-Boston.
 
SOFTBALL

ORLANDO, FL * Calvin opened its season with a 15-1 mercy-rule victory over Franklin and Marshall College (PA) Monday afternoon.

Senior Kara VanKooten (Anchorage, AK) picked up the complete game victory for the Knights as she scattered two hits over five innings of work.

Calvin belted out 17 hits in the victory with junior Laurel Sands (Rockford HS) going 2-for-2 at the plate with three RBI's including a two-run RBI triple in the top of the first when the Knights scored six times.

Senior Lea Bareman (Unity Christian HS) also picked up a pair of hits and a pair of RBI's. Sophomores Jalean Makedonsky (Imlay City) and Chandra Fynaardt (Pella, IA) also belted triples for Calvin while senior Abby Konyndyk ripped a double.

Calvin returns to grapefruit play tomorrow when it plays games against William Paterson and Endicott College.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S COLLEGE TENNIS

HILTON HEAD, SC * The Calvin men's and women's tennis teams picked up victories in Hilton Head, South Carolina, on Monday as the men defeated Farleigh Dickinson University 7-0 while the women defeated St. Lawrence University 7-2. The Calvin men's tennis team is now 2-1 on the season while the women are 1-1.
